Psalms 89

Read Psalms 89 in clear, relatable modern language.

A Hymn to God’s Faithfulness

I will sing about the loyal grace of the Lord forever; With my mouth I will tell about Your truth to all generations.

Because I said, “Loyal grace will be built forever; You will make Your truth solid in the heavens.”

“I made a promise with My Chosen One; I swore to David My servant:

I will make your family stand forever, And build your throne for all generations.

A Song of Praise to God’s Power

And the heavens will praise Your awesome moves, Lord, Your truth also in the crew of the faithful.

Because who in the clouds is on the same level as the Lord, Who is like the Lord among the gods,

A God to be feared in the great crew of the holy ones, And awesome to all around Him.

Lord God of armies, who is strong like You, Lord, Your truth also is all around You.

You rule the wilding of the sea; When its waves get up, You calm them down.

You smashed Rahab like one who was killed; You scattered Your enemies with Your strong arm.

The heavens are Yours, the earth is also Yours; The world and everything in it, You set them up.

You made the north and the south; Tabor and Hermon cheer about Your name.

You have a strong arm; Your hand is strong, Your right hand is lifted high.

Righteousness and justice are the base of Your throne; Loyal grace and truth go in front of Your face.

A Confession of God’s Covenant with David

Happy are the people who know the shout; Lord, they walk in the light of Your face.

They celebrate in Your name all day, And in Your righteousness they are lifted high.

Because You are the props of their strength, And in Your favor our horn is lifted high.

Because our shield belongs to the Lord, And our king to the Holy One of Israel.

Then You spoke in a vision to Your loyal one, and said, “I put help on a mighty one; I lifted up a chosen one from the people.

I found David My servant; With My holy oil I anointed him;

With whom My hand will be steady; My arm also will make him strong.

The enemy will not cheat him, Or the wicked dude mess with him.

I will smash his haters in front of him, And hit those who hate him.

My truth and My loyal grace will be with him, And in My name his horn will be lifted high.

I will also put his hand on the sea, And his right hand on the rivers.

He will call out to Me, ‘You are my Dad, My God, and the rock of my rescue.’

I will also make him the firstborn, The highest of the kings of the earth.

I will keep My loyal grace for him forever, And My promise with him will be steady.

I will also make his family last forever, And his throne like the days of heaven.

If his sons leave My law And do not walk in My rules,

If they mess up My promises And do not keep My commands,

Then I will call out their wrong with a stick, And their sin with a beating.

But My loyal grace I will not take from him, And I will not be fake to My truth.

I will not mess up My promise, And I will not change what came out of My lips.

Once I swore by My holiness; I will not lie to David.

His family will last forever, And his throne like the sun in front of Me.

It will be steady forever like the moon, And like the faithful witness in the sky.

A Lament for the Broken Covenant

But You pushed away and ditched Your chosen one; You were mad at him.

You broke the promise with Your servant; You made his crown dirty by throwing it to the ground.

You busted all his fences; You made his fortresses ruins.

All who pass by rob him; He became a diss to his neighbors.

You lifted the right hand of his haters; You made all his enemies happy.

You also turned the edge of his sword, And You did not hold him up in the fight.

You stopped his props And You threw his throne to the ground.

You cut his young days short; You covered him with shame.

A Final Plea

How long, Lord, Will You hide forever, Will Your wrath burn like fire,

Remember how short my life is. Why do You make all humans for nothing?

What dude lives and will not see death, Who will save his soul from the hand of the grave,

Where are Your old-school loyal graces, Lord, Which You swore to David in Your truth,

Remember, Lord, the diss of Your servants; How I carry in my gut the diss of all the mighty people,

With which Your enemies dissed, Lord, With which they dissed the footsteps of Your chosen one.

Blessed be the Lord forever! Amen and Amen.
