Read Psalms 88 in clear, relatable modern language.
A Cry from the Depths
O Lord, God of my rescue, I cried out day and night in front of You.
Let my prayer get to You; Bend Your ear to my cry.
Because my soul is full of troubles, And my life is close to the grave.
I am counted with those who go down to the pit; I am like a dude without strength,
Left among the dead, Like the killed who lay in the grave, Whom You do not remember anymore, And who are cut off from Your hand.
A Plea for God to Act
You put me in the lowest pit, In the dark spots, in the deeps.
Your anger rests on me, And You hit me with all Your waves.
You put my close friends far from me; You made me a gross sight to them; I am trapped and cannot get out.
My eye is weak from sorrow; I call on You, Lord, all day long; I hold my hands out to You.
Will You do awesome moves for the dead, Will the ghosts get up and thank You,
Will Your loyal grace be told in the grave, Or Your truth in the spot of destruction,
Will Your awesome moves be known in the dark, Or Your righteousness in the land of being forgotten, A Final Cry
But I cried out to You, Lord, And in the morning my prayer gets to You.
Lord, why You push away my soul, Why You hide Your face from me,
I am suffering and about to die from when I was young; I went through Your terror, I am messed up.
Your hot wrath went over me; Your scares finished me off.
They surrounded me like water all day; They got me all at once.
You put my lover and friend far from me; My close friends are just darkness.
