Psalms 55

A Lament of Betrayal

1 Listen to my prayer, God; And do not hide from my plea.

2 Pay attention to me and answer me; I am walking around sad and groaning.

3 Because of the voice of the enemy, because of the pressure of the wicked; because they drop trouble on me, And they come at me with anger.

4 My heart is twisted up inside me, And the scares of death hit me.

5 Fear and trembling came over me, And terror got me.

6 And I said, “I wish I had wings like a bird! I would fly away and be at rest.

7 I would fly far away, And live in the desert.

8 I would hurry up and find a safe spot From the wind and the storm.

A Cry for God’s Justice

9 Mess them up, Lord, divide their tongues, because I saw violence and fighting in the city.

10 Day and night they walk on its walls; Evil and trouble are in the middle of it.

11 Destruction is in the middle of it; Oppression and lies is not ever leaving its streets.

12 Because it was not an enemy who was dissing me, I could have taken that, It was not a hater who was acting big on me, I could have hid from him.

13 But it was you, a dude on my level, My guide and my close homie.

14 We used to chill together and be tight; We used to walk with the crowd to God’s house.

15 Let death hit them suddenly; Let them go down to the grave alive, because evil is in their homes, in their hearts.

A Declaration of Trust

16 As for me, I will call out to God, And the Lord will save me.

17 Evening, morning, and at noon, I will cry and groan, And He will hear my voice.

18 He will rescue my soul in peace from the fight against me, because a bunch of people are against me.

19 God, who sits on the throne forever, will hear and answer them, because they do not change And they do not fear God.

20 He put his hands on those who were at peace with him; He broke his promise.

21 His mouth was smoother than butter, But war was in his heart; His words were smoother than oil, But they were like drawn swords.

An Encouragement

22 Drop your heavy stuff on the Lord, And He will hold you up; He will never let the righteous dude get shook.

23 But You, God, will bring them down to the pit of destruction; Bloodthirsty and fake dudes Will not even live out half their days. But me, I will trust in You.
