Psalms 40
Read Psalms 40 in clear, relatable modern language.
A Song of Deliverance
1 I waited for the Lord with patience; He bent down to me and heard my cry.
2 He brought me up from the nasty pit, Out of the mud and the clay; He set my feet on a rock And made my steps solid.
3 He put a new song in my mouth, A praise to our God. A bunch of people will see it and be in awe, And they will trust in the Lord.
A Call to Do God’s Will
4 Happy is the dude who trusts in the Lord And do not turn to the proud or the fake people.
5 You did a bunch of stuff, Lord my God. Your awesome moves and Your thoughts for us cannot be compared with anyone. If I were going to tell about them and talk about them, they would be too many to count.
6 You do not want sacrifices or offerings; You opened my ears. You do not ask for burnt offerings or sin offerings.
7 Then I said, “Look, I am coming, In the book scroll it is written about me.”
8 I love to do Your will, my God; Your law is in my heart.
A Prayer for God’s Help
9 I told the good news of Your righteousness in the big crowd; Look, I did not hold my lips back, Lord, You know.
10 I did not hide Your righteousness in my heart; I talked about Your loyalty and Your rescue. I did not hide Your grace and Your truth from the big crowd.
11 You, Lord, will not hold back Your mercy from me; Your grace and Your truth will always protect me.
12 Because a bunch of troubles got me, My sins caught me, and I cannot see. They more than the hairs on my head; My heart left me.
13 Lord, be happy to rescue me; Lord, hurry up and help me!
14 Let them who look to take my life be embarrassed and ashamed; Let them who want to mess me up turn back and be confused.
15 Let them be shocked because of their shame, Who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”
16 Let all who look for You be happy and celebrate in You; Let those who love Your rescue always say, “The Lord is big-time!”
17 As for me, I am broke and needy, But the Lord is thinking about me. You are my help and my rescuer; My God, do not hold up.
