Psalms 39
Read Psalms 39 in clear, relatable modern language.
A Reflection on Life
1 I said, “I am going to watch my steps, so I do not mess up with my tongue. I am going to put a guard on my mouth, As long as the wicked dude is in front of me.”
2 I was quiet, not saying a word, I kept quiet about what was good, But my sorrow got worse.
3 My heart was burning inside me; While I was thinking, the fire got lit. Then I talked with my tongue.
4 “Lord, show me my end and the count of my days, So I know how short my time is.
5 Look, You made my days just a handful; And my life is nothing in front of You. For sure, every dude, even when he is strong, is just a whisper.”
6 For sure, a dude walks around like a ghost; For sure, they get worried for no reason; He piles up stuff and he does not know who is going to get it.
A Prayer of Despair and Hope
7 And now, Lord, what am I waiting for, My hope is in You.
8 Save me from all my sins; Do not make me a joke to the fool.
9 I was quiet, I did not open my mouth, because You did it.
10 Get Your punishment off me; I am gone because Your hand is heavy on me.
11 When You discipline a dude for his wrong, You wear down his money like a moth. For sure, every dude is just a whisper.
12 Listen to my prayer, Lord, and hear my cry; Do not be quiet at my tears. Because I am a stranger with You, A guest, like all my dads.
13 Stop looking at me, so I can smile again, Before I go and I am gone.
