Psalms 22

Read Psalms 22 in clear, relatable modern language.

A Cry of Despair

My God, my God, why You leave me, Why You so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning,

My God, I call out in the day, but You do not answer, And at night, but I am not getting no break.

But You are holy, You live in the praises of Israel.

Our dads trusted in You; They trusted, and You rescued them.

They cried out to You and got saved; They trusted in You and were not disappointed.

The Mockery

But me, I am a worm, not even human; I am trashed by people, looked down on by everybody.

All who see me clown on me; They sneer with their lips, they shake their heads:

“He ran to the Lord; let Him save him; Let Him rescue him, because He likes him!

A Plea for God to Act

But You are the one who brought me out the womb; You made me trust on my mother’s chest.

I was put in Your care from birth; From my mom’s womb, You been my God.

Do not be far from me, because trouble is close, And nobody is to help.

A bunch of bulls are around me; Strong bulls of Bashan surround me.

They open their mouths wide at me Like a ripping, roaring lion.

I am poured out like water, And all my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax, It is melted inside me.

My strength is dried up like a piece of broken pottery, And my tongue is stuck to the roof of my mouth. You put me in the dust of death.

A bunch of dogs surround me; A crew of evil people got me in a lock. They pierced my hands and feet.

I can count all my bones; They just staring at me.

They are splitting up my clothes among them, And they are rolling dice for my shirt.

But You, Lord, do not be far away! My strength, hurry up and help me!

Rescue my life from the sword, My only life from the power of the dogs.

Save me from the lion’s mouth; You heard me from the horns of the wild bulls.

A Song of Praise

I will tell my homies about Your name; In the middle of the people, I will praise You:

“All you who fear the Lord, praise Him! All you kids of Jacob, give Him honor! Be in awe of Him, all you kids of Israel!”

Because He did not look down on or hate the suffering of the broke; He did not hide His face from him, But when he cried out, He listened.

My praise comes from You in the big crowd. I will pay my promises in front of those who fear Him.

The broke will eat and be full; Those who look for the Lord will praise Him. Your hearts will live forever.

The Kingdom of God

All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord; And all the families of the nations will bow down in front of You.

Because the kingdom belongs to the Lord, And He rules over the nations.

All the well-off of the earth will eat and bow down; All who go down to the dust will bend a knee in front of Him, Even the one who cannot keep himself alive.

A family will serve Him; The next generation will hear about the Lord.

They will come and tell about His righteousness To a people yet to be born, that He did it.
