Psalms 139
Read Psalms 139 in clear, relatable modern language.
A Hymn of God’s Presence
Lord, You searched me and You know me.
You know my sitting and my getting up; You get my thoughts from far away.
You get my walking and my laying down, And You know all my ways.
Because there is not a word on my tongue, But look, Lord, You know it all.
You got me from behind and in front, And You put Your hand on me.
This knowledge is too awesome for me; It is so high I cannot get it.
God’s Presence
Where can I go from Your Spirit, And where can I run from Your face,
If I go up to the heavens, You are there; If I make my bed in the grave, look, You are there.
If I take the wings of the morning, And live at the ends of the sea,
Even there Your hand will lead me, And Your right hand will hold me.
If I say, “For sure the darkness will cover me,” And the light around me will be night,
Even the darkness will not be dark to You; The night will shine like the day; The darkness and the light are the same to You.
A Confession of God’s Creation
Because You made my insides; You put me together in my mom’s womb.
I will thank You, because I am made so awesome and scary; Your works are awesome, and my soul knows it for real.
My bones were not hidden from You When I was made in the secret spot, When I was put together in the lowest parts of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unfinished body; And in Your book all of them were written, The days that were set for me, When none of them were yet.
A Final Plea
How precious also are Your thoughts to me, God! How many are they!
If I count them, they are more than the sand; When I wake up, I am still with You.
God, I wish You would kill the wicked dude! Get far from me, you bloodthirsty dudes.
Because they talk about You with bad intentions, And Your haters take Your name for nothing.
Lord, do I not hate those who hate You, And do I not feel disgusted with those who get up against You,
I hate them with a perfect hate; I count them as my enemies.
Search me, God, and know my heart; Test me and know my thoughts;
And see if there is any messed-up way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way.
