Proverbs 13

A Father’s Discipline

1 A wise son listens to his father’s instruction, but a mocker will not hear correction.

2 From the fruit of his mouth a man eats good, but the soul of the treacherous feeds on violence.

3 He who guards his mouth preserves his life, but he who runs his mouth ruins himself.

4 The lazy want but get nothing, but the diligent get plenty.

5 The righteous hate lies, but the wicked make themselves stink with shame.

6 Righteousness guards the man with integrity, but wickedness topples the sinner.

7 Some act rich but got nothing; some act broke but got great wealth.

8 A rich man’s wealth saves him from trouble, but a poor man never hears the threat.

9 The light of the righteous shines bright, but the lamp of the wicked goes out.

10 Pride brings beef, but wisdom found with those who take advice.

11 Wealth gained quick fades fast, but the one who stacks slow grows steady.

12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a dream fulfilled is like a tree of life.

13 Whoever despises the word pays for it, but whoever respects the command gets rewarded.

14 The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, turning people from the traps of death.

15 Good sense wins favor, but the way of the traitor stays hard.

16 Every prudent man acts with knowledge, but a fool puts his foolishness on blast.

17 A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a faithful one brings healing.

18 Poverty and shame hit those who ignore correction, but whoever listens to reproof gets honored.

19 A desire fulfilled sweet to the soul, but fools hate turning from evil.

20 Walk with the wise and get wise; hang with fools and get wrecked.

21 Trouble chases sinners, but blessings chase the righteous.

22 A good man leaves an inheritance for his kids’ kids, but a sinner’s wealth gets stored for the righteous.

23 Abundant food in the fallow ground of the poor, but injustice sweeps it away.

24 He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him early.

25 The righteous eat till they full, but the stomach of the wicked goes hungry.
