Urban Word Bible
John 8
Read John 8 in clear, relatable modern language.
The Woman Caught in Sin
But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
Early in the morning He came back into the temple, and all the people were coming to Him, and He sat down and started teaching them.
The scribes and Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery and made her stand in the center.
They said to Him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.
Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone women like this. What do You say?”
They were saying this to test Him so they could accuse Him. But Jesus bent down and started writing on the ground with His finger.
When they kept pressing Him, He stood up and said, “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”
Then He bent down and kept writing.
When they heard that, they started leaving one by one, beginning with the older ones, until it was just Jesus and the woman standing there.
Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they, Did no one condemn you?”
She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “I do not condemn you either. Go, and from now on do not keep sinning.”
Jesus Is the Light of the World
Then Jesus spoke again, saying, “I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the Light of life.”
The Pharisees said to Him, “You are testifying about Yourself, Your testimony is not valid.”
Jesus answered, “Even if I testify about Myself, My testimony is true, because I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know either.”
“You judge according to the flesh, I am not judging anyone right now.
But even if I do judge, My judgment is true, because I am not alone, I am with the Father who sent Me.
Even in your Law it says the testimony of two people is true.
I am One who testifies about Myself, and the Father who sent Me testifies about Me.”
So they said, “Where is Your Father?” Jesus answered, “You do not know Me or My Father. If you knew Me, you would know My Father also.”
He said these things in the treasury while teaching in the temple, and no one arrested Him because His time had not come yet.
You Will Die in Your Sin
Then He said again, “I am going away, and you will look for Me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.”
So the Jews were saying, “Is He is going to kill Himself, since He says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?”
And He was saying to them, “You are from below, I am from above. You are of this world, I am not of this world.
That is why I said you will die in your sins, because unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”
So they were saying to Him, “Who are You?” Jesus said, “What I have been telling you from the beginning.
I have many things to speak and judge concerning you, but He who sent Me is true, and what I heard from Him, that is what I speak to the world.”
They did not understand that He was talking about the Father.
So Jesus said, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and I do nothing on My own, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me.
And He who sent Me is with Me, He has not left Me alone, because I always do what pleases Him.”
As He spoke these things, many came to believe in Him.
Truth Sets You Free
So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly My disciples.
And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been enslaved to anyone. How are You saying we will become free?”
Jesus answered, “For real, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin.
A slave does not stay in the house forever, but a son does.
So if the Son makes you free, you will be free for real.”
Children of Abraham or Children of the Devil
“I know you are Abraham’s descendants, but you are trying to kill Me because My word has no place in you.
I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”
They answered, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the deeds of Abraham.
But instead you are trying to kill Me, a man who told you the truth from God. Abraham did not do that.
You are doing the deeds of your father.” They said, “We were not born from immorality, we have one Father, God.”
Jesus said, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, because I came from God. I did not come on My own, He sent Me.
Why do you not understand what I am saying, Because you cannot hear My word.”
“You are of your father the devil, and you want to do his desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies.
But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me.”
“Which one of you convicts Me of sin, If I speak truth, why do you not believe Me,
The one who is of God hears the words of God. That is why you do not hear, because you are not of God.”
Before Abraham Was, I Am
The Jews answered Him, “Are we not right in saying You are a Samaritan and have a demon?”
Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon, but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me.
I am not seeking My own glory, there is One who seeks it and judges.”
“For real, if anyone keeps My word, he will never see death.”
The Jews said, “Now we know You got a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets too, and You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word, he will never taste death.’
You are not greater than our father Abraham, are You, Who do You make Yourself out to be?”
Jesus answered, “If I glorify Myself, My glory means nothing. It is My Father who glorifies Me, the One you say is your God.
You do not know Him, but I know Him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know Him and keep His word.
Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.”
So the Jews said, “You are not even fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?”
Jesus said, “For real, before Abraham was born, I AM.”
So they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple.
