Jesus’ Brothers Do Not Believe Him

1 After this, Jesus stayed moving around in Galilee because the Jews in Judea were trying to kill Him.

2 Now the Feast of Booths was coming up.

3 His brothers said to Him, “You should leave here and go to Judea so Your disciples can see the works You are doing.

4 Nobody trying to be known does things in secret. If You doing all this, show Yourself to the world.”

5 Even His own brothers did not believe in Him.

6 So Jesus said, “My time has not come yet, but your time is always ready.

7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify that its deeds are evil.

8 You all go up to the feast, I am not going yet because My time has not fully come.”

9 After saying that, He stayed in Galilee.

Jesus Shows Up Quietly

10 But after His brothers went up, He also went, not openly, but in secret.

11 The Jews were looking for Him at the feast, saying, “Where He at?”

12 There was a lot of whispering about Him in the crowd. Some said, “He is a good man.” Others said, “Nah, He is deceiving people.”

13 But nobody was speaking openly about Him because they were scared of the leaders.

Jesus Teaches with Authority

14 About halfway through the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and started teaching.

15 The Jews were amazed, saying, “How does this man know so much without being formally trained?”

16 Jesus answered, “My teaching is not Mine, it comes from the One who sent Me.

17 If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or if I am speaking on My own.

18 The one who speaks from himself is chasing his own glory, but the one who seeks the glory of the One who sent him, he is real, and there is no falsehood in him.”

19 “Did not Moses give you the Law, Yet none of you all actually keep it. Why are you trying to kill Me?”

20 The crowd answered, “You got a demon. Who is trying to kill You?”

21 Jesus said, “I did one work, and you all are all amazed.

22 Moses gave you circumcision, not that it started with Moses but from the fathers, and you all circumcise a man on the Sabbath.

23 If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so the Law is not broken, why are you mad at Me for making a whole man well on the Sabbath,

24 Stop judging by appearances, judge with right judgment.”

Is This Really the Christ,

25 Some people from Jerusalem were saying, “is not this the man they trying to kill,

26 Look, He is speaking openly, and they not saying anything to Him. Do the leaders actually think He is the Christ,

27 But we know where this man is from. When the Christ comes, nobody is supposed to know where He is from.”

28 So Jesus cried out while teaching in the temple, “You know Me, and you know where I am from, but I did not come on My own. The One who sent Me is true, and you do not know Him.

29 I know Him because I am from Him, and He sent Me.”

30 They tried to grab Him, but nobody laid a hand on Him because His time had not come yet.

31 But many in the crowd believed in Him, saying, “When the Christ comes, He will not do more signs than this man has, will He?”

Leaders Try to Arrest Him

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering about Him, so they and the chief priests sent officers to arrest Him.

33 Jesus said, “I am with you a little while longer, then I am going to Him who sent Me.

34 You will look for Me and will not find Me, and where I am, you cannot come.”

35 The Jews said to each other, “Where is He planning to go that we cannot find Him, Is He going to the scattered Jews among the Greeks and teach the Greeks,

36 What does He mean by ‘You will look for Me and will not find Me’?”

Living Water for Those Who Come

37 On the last day, the big day of the feast, Jesus stood up and shouted, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.

38 The one who believes in Me, like the Scripture says, from his inner being will flow rivers of living water.”

39 He was talking about the Spirit, who those who believed in Him were going to receive, because the Spirit had not been given yet since Jesus was not glorified yet.

The Crowd Is Divided

40 Some of the crowd, when they heard this, said, “This really is the Prophet.”

41 Others said, “This is the Christ.” But some said, “The Christ is not coming from Galilee, is He,

42 Does not Scripture say the Christ comes from David’s line and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?”

43 So the people were divided because of Him.

44 Some wanted to arrest Him, but nobody laid hands on Him.

The Officers Come Back Empty

45 The officers came back to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said, “Why did you not bring Him?”

46 The officers answered, “Never has a man spoken the way this man speaks.”

47 The Pharisees said, “You have been deceived too,

48 None of the rulers or Pharisees have believed in Him, have they,

49 But this crowd that does not know the Law is cursed.”

50 Nicodemus, the one who had come to Jesus before, said to them,

51 “Our Law does not judge a man before hearing him and knowing what he is doing, does it?”

52 They answered him, “You not from Galilee too, are you, Search and see that no prophet comes out of Galilee.”

53 Then everyone went back to their homes.
