The Man Born Blind Gets Sight

1 As Jesus was walking along, He saw a man who had been blind since birth.

2 His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”

3 Jesus answered, “It was not this man or his parents, but this happened so the works of God could be shown in him.

4 We must do the works of Him who sent Me while it is still day, because night is coming when nobody can work.

5 While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.”

6 After saying this, He spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes.

7 Then He told him, “Go wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went, washed, and came back seeing.

People Do Not Know What to Think

8 The neighbors and people who used to see him begging were saying, “is not this the one who used to sit and beg?”

9 Some said, “Yeah, that is him.” Others said, “Nah, it just looks like him.” But he kept saying, “I am the one.”

10 So they asked him, “Then how were your eyes opened?”

11 He answered, “The man called Jesus made mud, put it on my eyes, and told me to go wash in Siloam, and when I went and washed, I received my sight.”

12 They said, “Where is He?” He said, “I do not know.”

The Pharisees Start Questioning

13 They brought the man who used to be blind to the Pharisees.

14 Now it was the Sabbath when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes.

15 So the Pharisees were asking him again how he received his sight, and he said, “He put mud on my eyes, I washed, and now I see.”

16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath.” Others said, “How can a sinner do signs like this?” And there was division among them.

17 So they said to the blind man again, “What do you say about Him, since He opened your eyes?” And he said, “He is a prophet.”

They Do Not Want to Believe

18 The Jews still did not believe he had been blind and received sight, so they called his parents.

19 They asked them, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind, Then how does he now see?”

20 His parents answered, “We know this is our son and that he was born blind,

21 but how he now sees, we do not know, or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him, he is old enough, he can speak for himself.”

22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, because the leaders had already agreed that anyone who confessed Jesus as the Christ would be put out of the synagogue.

23 That is why they said, “He is old enough, ask him.”

The Man Keeps It Real

24 So they called the man a second time and said, “Give glory to God, we know this man is a sinner.”

25 He answered, “Whether He is a sinner, I do not know. One thing I do know, I was blind, now I see.”

26 They said, “What did He do to you, How did He open your eyes?”

27 He answered, “I already told you all and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You do not want to become His disciples too, do you?”

28 They insulted him and said, “You are His disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.

29 We know God spoke to Moses, but we do not know where this man is from.”

30 The man answered, “That is crazy. You do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes.

31 We know God does not listen to sinners, but if someone fears God and does His will, He listens to him.

32 Since the beginning of time, nobody is ever heard of someone opening the eyes of a man born blind.

33 If this man was not from God, He could not do anything.”

34 They answered him, “You were born completely in sin, and you trying to teach us,” And they kicked him out.

Jesus Finds Him Again

35 Jesus heard they had kicked him out, and when He found him, He said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”

36 He answered, “Who is He, Lord, so I can believe in Him?”

37 Jesus said, “You have both seen Him, and He is the One talking to you.”

38 And he said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped Him.

Spiritual Blindness Exposed

39 Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, so that those who do not see may see, and those who think they see may become blind.”

40 Some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard this and said, “We are not blind too, are we?”

41 Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would not have sin, but since you say, ‘We see,’ your sin remains.”
