John 6

Jesus Feeds the Crowd

1 After this, Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee.

2 A large crowd kept following Him because they saw the signs He was doing on the sick.

3 Jesus went up on the mountain and sat down with His disciples.

4 Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near.

5 Jesus looked up and saw a big crowd coming toward Him and said to Philip, “Where are we going to buy bread so all these people can eat?”

6 He said this to test him, because He already knew what He was about to do.

7 Philip answered, “Even if we had a ton of money, it would not be enough to give everybody even a little.”

8 One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said,

9 “There is a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish, but what is that for all these people?”

10 Jesus said, “Have everybody sit down.” There was plenty of grass there, and about five thousand men sat down, not even counting the rest.

11 Jesus took the bread, gave thanks, and started passing it out to the people, same with the fish, as much as they wanted.

12 When everybody was full, He told His disciples, “Gather up the leftovers so nothing goes to waste.”

13 So they picked up twelve baskets full from the leftovers of the five loaves.

14 When the people saw what He did, they said, “This really is the Prophet who has supposed to come into the world.”

15 Jesus knew they were about to try to force Him to be king, so He slipped away by Himself.

Jesus Walks on Water

16 When evening came, His disciples went down to the sea.

17 They got into a boat and started heading to Capernaum. It got dark, and Jesus had not come to them yet.

18 The sea started getting rough because of a strong wind.

19 After rowing for a while, they saw Jesus walking on the water, coming near the boat, and they were scared.

20 But He said, “It is Me, do not be afraid.”

21 Then they were willing to take Him into the boat, and right away the boat reached the land they were heading to.

The Crowd Wants More Food

22 The next day, the crowd realized Jesus was not there, and neither were His disciples.

23 Other boats came in, and

24 when they saw He was not there, they got into boats and went to Capernaum looking for Him.

25 When they found Him, they said, “Rabbi, when did You get here?”

26 Jesus answered, “For real, you are not looking for Me because you understood the signs, but because you ate the bread and got full.

27 Do not work for food that perishes, but for food that lasts to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.”

28 They said, “What do we need to do to do the works of God?”

29 Jesus said, “This is the work of God, that you believe in the One He sent.”

30 So they said, “Then what sign You are going to show us so we can believe, What You are going to do,

31 Our fathers ate manna in the wilderness, like it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”

32 Jesus said, “I am telling you the truth, it was not Moses who gave you that bread, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven.

33 The bread of God is the One who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

34 They said, “Sir, give us this bread all the time.”

I Am the Bread of Life

35 Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never hunger, and whoever believes in Me will never thirst.

36 But I told you, you have seen Me and still do not believe.

37 All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will never cast out.”

38 “I came down from heaven not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.

39 And this is His will, that I lose none of all He has given Me, but raise them up on the last day.

40 This is the will of My Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.”

People Start Complaining

41 The Jews started complaining because He said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”

42 They said, “is not this Jesus, Joseph’s son, We know His parents. How is He saying He came down from heaven?”

43 Jesus answered, “Stop complaining among yourselves.

44 No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him, and I will raise him up on the last day.

45 It is written in the prophets, ‘They shall all be taught of God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me.”

46 “Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the One who is from God, He has seen the Father.

47 I am telling you the truth, the one who believes has eternal life.

48 I am the bread of life.”

49 “Your fathers ate manna in the wilderness and still died.

50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven so that a person may eat and not die.

51 I am the living bread that came down out of heaven. If anyone eats this bread, he will live forever, and the bread that I give for the life of the world is My flesh.”

Hard Teaching That Offends People

52 The Jews started arguing, saying, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?”

53 So Jesus said, “For real, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you do not have life in yourselves.

54 The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

55 “My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink.

56 The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in him.

57 Just like the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so the one who eats Me will live because of Me.”

58 “This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread your fathers ate and still died. The one who eats this bread will live forever.”

59 He said these things while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

Many Walk Away

60 Many of His disciples heard this and said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can listen to it?”

61 But Jesus, knowing they were complaining, said, “Does this offend you,

62 What then if you see the Son of Man ascending to where He was before?”

63 “It is the Spirit who gives life, the flesh profits nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who did not believe and who would betray Him.

65 And He said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by the Father.”

66 Because of this, many of His disciples turned back and stopped following Him.

The Twelve Stay

67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “You do not want to leave too, do you?”

68 Simon Peter answered, “Lord, where are we going to go, You have the words of eternal life.

69 We have believed and come to know that You are the Holy One of God.”

70 Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve, And yet one of you is a devil.”

71 He was talking about Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, because he was going to betray Him, even though he was one of the twelve.
