John 5

Read John 5 in clear, relatable modern language.

The Man at the Pool Gets Healed

After this, there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

Now in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate there was a pool, called Bethesda in Hebrew, with five porches.

In those porches lay a crowd of sick people, blind, lame, and paralyzed, all waiting around.

At certain times, an angel came down and stirred up the water. The first person to step in after the water moved was healed from whatever sickness they had.

There was a man there who had been sick for 38 years.

Jesus saw him lying there and knew he had been like that a long time, and He asked him, “You want to get well,”

The man said, “Sir, I got nobody to put me in the pool when the water gets stirred, and while I am trying to get there, someone else gets in before me.”

Jesus said, “Get up, pick up your mat, and walk.”

Right then the man got healed, picked up his mat, and started walking. Now it was the Sabbath that day.

So the Jews said to the man who was healed, “It is the Sabbath, you are not allowed to carry your mat.”

He answered, “The One who made me well told me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’”

They asked him, “Who told you that?”

But the man did not know who it was, because Jesus had slipped away into the crowd.

Later Jesus found him in the temple and said, “Look, you have been made well. Do not keep sinning, so nothing worse happens to you.”

The man went and told the Jews that it was Jesus who healed him.

They Start Coming Against Jesus

Because of this, the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath.

But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working.”

Because of that, they were trying even harder to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but He was also calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.

The Son Has Authority from the Father

Jesus said to them, “For real, the Son can do nothing on His own, He only does what He sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son does the same way.

The Father loves the Son and shows Him everything He is doing, and He will show Him even greater works than these so you all will be amazed.”

“Just like the Father raises the dead and gives them life, the Son also gives life to whoever He wants.

The Father does not judge anyone, but has given all judgment to the Son,

so that everyone will honor the Son just like they honor the Father. If you do not honor the Son, you are not honoring the Father who sent Him.”

“I am telling you the truth, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.”

The Dead Will Hear His Voice

“For real, a time is coming, and it is already here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.

Just like the Father has life in Himself, He gave the Son also to have life in Himself,

and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man.”

“Do not be amazed at this, because a time is coming when everyone in the graves will hear His voice

and come out. Those who did good to a resurrection of life, and those who practiced evil to a resurrection of judgment.”

“I can do nothing on My own. I judge as I hear, and My judgment is right, because I am not seeking My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.”

Witnesses That Prove Who Jesus Is

“If I testify about Myself, My testimony is not considered valid alone.

There is another who testifies about Me, and I know His testimony about Me is true.”

“You sent to John, and he testified to the truth.

Not that I depend on human testimony, but I say these things so you can be saved.

John was like a lamp shining, and you were willing to enjoy his light for a while.”

“But the testimony I have is greater than John’s. The works the Father gave Me to finish, the very works I am doing, they testify that the Father sent Me.

And the Father who sent Me, He has testified about Me. You have never heard His voice or seen His form,

and you do not have His word living in you, because you do not believe the One He sent.”

“You search the Scriptures because you think in them you have eternal life, but those very Scriptures testify about Me,

and yet you refuse to come to Me so you can have life.”

They Know the Scriptures but Miss GOD

“I do not receive glory from people,

but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you.

I came in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me. If someone else comes in his own name, you will receive him.”

“How can you believe when you seek glory from one another and not the glory that comes from the only God,

Do not think I am the one accusing you before the Father. Moses is the one accusing you, the one you set your hope on.

If you believed Moses, you would believe Me, because he wrote about Me.

But if you do not believe his writings, how you are going to believe My words?”
