Urban Word Bible
John 16
Read John 16 in clear, relatable modern language.
They Will Come Against You
1 “I have told you these things so you do not fall away.
2 They are going to put you out of the synagogues, and a time is coming when whoever kills you will think they are doing God a favor.
3 They will do this because they do not know the Father or Me.”
4 “But I have told you this so when that time comes, you will remember I warned you. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you.”
The Spirit Is Coming to Help You
5 “Now I am going to the One who sent Me, and none of you are asking Me, ‘Where are You going?’
6 But because I have said these things, your hearts are filled with sorrow.”
7 “But I am telling you the truth, it is actually better for you that I go away. Because if I do not go, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send Him to you.”
8 “And when He comes, He will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment.
9 About sin, because they do not believe in Me.
10 About righteousness, because I go to the Father and you will not see Me anymore.
11 And about judgment, because the ruler of this world has already been judged.”
The Spirit Will Guide You
12 “I still have a lot to say to you, but you cannot handle it right now.
13 But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own, but whatever He hears, He will speak, and He will tell you what is coming.”
14 “He will glorify Me, because He will take from what is Mine and make it known to you.
15 Everything the Father has is Mine, that is why I said He takes from what is Mine and makes it known to you.”
Your Sorrow Will Turn Into Joy
16 “In a little while you will not see Me anymore, and then after a little while you will see Me.”
17 Some of His disciples were confused, saying, “What does He mean by this ‘little while’ talk, and that He is going to the Father?”
18 They kept asking, “What is He talking about, We do not understand.”
19 Jesus knew they wanted to ask Him, so He said, “Are you discussing what I said about ‘a little while’,
20 For real, you are going to cry and mourn while the world celebrates, you will be grieving, but your grief will turn into joy.”
21 “When a woman is giving birth, she has pain because her time has come, but once the child is born, she forgets the pain because of the joy that a child has come into the world.
22 That is how it is with you. Right now you have sorrow, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take that joy from you.”
Ask in My Name
23 “In that day you will not ask Me anything. For real, whatever you ask the Father in My name, He will give you.
24 Until now you have not asked for anything in My name. Ask and you will receive, so your joy may be full.”
25 “I have been speaking in figures, but a time is coming when I will not speak like that anymore, but will tell you plainly about the Father.
26 In that day you will ask in My name, and I am not saying I will ask the Father on your behalf,
27 because the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and believed I came from God.”
28 “I came from the Father and entered the world, and now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”
Peace in the Middle of Trouble
29 His disciples said, “Now You are speaking plainly and not using figures.
30 Now we know You know everything and do not need anyone to question You. Because of this we believe You came from God.”
31 Jesus answered, “You believe now,
32 Look, a time is coming, and it is already here, when you will be scattered, each one going his own way, leaving Me alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.”
33 “I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have overcome the world.”
