Urban Word Bible
John 15
Read John 15 in clear, relatable modern language.
The Vine and the Branches
1 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the gardener.
2 Every branch in Me that does not produce fruit, He takes away, and every branch that does produce fruit, He trims it so it can produce even more.
3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.”
4 “Stay connected to Me, and I will stay connected to you. Just like a branch cannot produce fruit by itself unless it stays connected to the vine, neither can you unless you stay connected to Me.
5 I am the vine, you are the branches. The one who stays in Me and I in him, that person produces a lot of fruit, because apart from Me you cannot do anything.”
6 “If anyone does not stay connected to Me, he gets thrown aside like a branch and dries up, and they gather them, throw them into the fire, and they get burned.
7 If you stay in Me, and My words stay in you, ask whatever you want, and it will be done for you.”
8 “My Father is glorified by this, that you produce a lot of fruit and prove to be My disciples.”
Love Like I Loved You
9 “Just like the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you. Stay in My love.
10 If you keep My commandments, you will stay in My love, just like I have kept My Father’s commandments and stay in His love.”
11 “I have told you these things so My joy may be in you, and your joy may be full.
12 This is My command: love one another just like I have loved you.”
13 “No one has greater love than this, that someone lays down his life for his friends.
14 You are My friends if you do what I command you.
15 I do not call you servants anymore, because a servant does not know what his master is doing, but I have called you friends, because everything I heard from My Father I have made known to you.”
16 “You did not choose Me, I chose you, and I appointed you so you would go and produce fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so whatever you ask the Father in My name, He may give it to you.
17 This I command you, that you love one another.”
The World Is Going to Hate You
18 “If the world hates you, know that it hated Me before it hated you.
19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own, but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, that is why the world hates you.”
20 “Remember what I told you, a servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you too. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also.
21 But they will do all these things to you because of My name, because they do not know the One who sent Me.”
22 “If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.
23 The one who hates Me also hates My Father.”
24 “If I had not done among them the works that anyone else did, they would not have sin, but now they have seen and still hated both Me and My Father.
25 But this happened to fulfill the word written in their Law, ‘They hated Me without a cause.’”
The Spirit Will Testify
26 “When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, He will testify about Me,
27 and you will testify also, because you have been with Me from the beginning.”
