Job’s Character and Wealth

1 There was a man in the land of Uz named Job. This dude was blameless, straight-up righteous, respected God, and stayed away from evil.

2 He had seven sons and three daughters.

3 Job was loaded, owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a ton of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East.

4 His sons used to throw big feasts in their homes on their set days, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.

5 When the parties were over, Job would send for them to be purified. Early in the morning he would offer a burnt sacrifice for each of them, thinking, “Maybe my kids sinned and disrespected God in their hearts.” Job did this regularly.

Satan’s First Attack on Job

6 One day the heavenly beings came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan showed up too.

7 The Lord asked Satan, “Where you been?” Satan replied, “I have been roaming all over the earth, checking things out.”

8 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you noticed my guy Job, There is nobody like him on earth, blameless, righteous, respects Me, and turns away from evil.”

9 Satan answered, “Yeah, but does Job respect You for nothing,

10 Have You not put a hedge of protection around him, his house, and everything he has got, You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have exploded across the land.

11 But stretch out Your hand and hit what he has, and I bet he will curse You to Your face.”

12 The Lord said, “Alright, everything he has is in your power, just do not lay a finger on him.” Then Satan left the Lord’s presence.

Job Loses Everything

13 One day, Job’s sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house.

14 A messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby,

15 When the Sabeans attacked and carried them off. They killed the servants with the sword, and I am the only one who escaped to tell you.”

16 While he was still talking, another messenger came and said, “The fire of God fell from the sky and burned up the sheep and the servants, and I am the only one who escaped to tell you.”

17 While he was still talking, another came and said, “The Chaldeans formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and carried them off. They killed the servants with the sword, and I am the only one who escaped to tell you.”

18 While he was still talking, another messenger came and said, “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,

19 When suddenly a strong wind came from the desert, hit the four corners of the house, and it collapsed on them, they are all dead. I am the only one who escaped to tell you.”

Job’s Response

20 Then Job stood up, tore his robe, shaved his head, fell to the ground, and worshiped.

21 He said, “I came into this world with nothing, and I will leave with nothing. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

22 In all this, Job did not sin or blame God.
