Urban Word Bible
Job 2
Read Job 2 in clear, relatable modern language.
Satan’s Second Attack on Job
1 Another day came when the heavenly beings showed up to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan rolled through too.
2 The Lord asked Satan, “Where you been?” Satan said, “I have been roaming the earth, back and forth, checking things out.”
3 The Lord said, “Have you noticed my guy Job, Still nobody like him, blameless, righteous, respects Me, and turns away from evil. And even though you pushed Me to let you hit him for no reason, he is still holding strong.”
4 Satan replied, “Skin for skin! A man will give up anything to save his own life.
5 But if You stretch out Your hand and strike his flesh and bones, I bet he will curse You to Your face.”
6 The Lord said, “Alright, he is in your hands, just do not take his life.”
Job’s Physical Suffering
7 So Satan left the Lord’s presence and hit Job with painful sores from the bottom of his feet to the top of his head.
8 Job sat down in the ashes and grabbed a broken piece of pottery to scrape himself with.
Job’s Wife Speaks Out
9 His wife said, “You still holding on to your integrity, Just curse God and die!”
10 But Job replied, “You talk like a foolish woman. Should we accept good from God and not trouble,” In all this, Job did not sin with his lips.
Job’s Friends Arrive
11 When Job’s three friends, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite, heard about all the trouble that had hit him, they set out from their homes and met together to go comfort him.
12 When they saw him from a distance, they barely recognized him. They started crying loud, tore their robes, and threw dust into the air over their heads.
13 They sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights. No one said a word, because they saw how deep his pain was.
