Hebrews 2

Jesus Became One of Us

1 That is why we need to hold tight to what we heard, so we do not slowly drift away.

2 The message delivered through angels stood firm, and every act of rebellion and disobedience received a fair consequence.

3 So how do we think we will escape if we ignore such a great salvation? The Lord announced it first, and those who heard Him confirmed it to us.

4 God backed up their witness with signs, wonders, powerful works, and gifts of the Holy Spirit given according to His will.

5 God did not put the world to come, the world we are talking about, under the authority of angels.

6 Scripture says, “What are human beings that You remember them, or the Son of Man that You care for Him?”

7 “You made Him lower than the angels for a little while, then crowned Him with glory and honor.”

8 “You put everything under His feet.” When God placed everything under Him, nothing was left outside His rule, even though we do not yet see it all fully worked out.

9 But we do see Jesus. He was made lower than the angels for a little while, suffered death, and is now crowned with glory and honor. By God’s grace, He tasted death for everybody.

10 It was right for God, the One everything exists for and through, to make the trailblazer of our salvation complete through suffering as He brought many sons and daughters into glory.

11 The One who makes people holy and the people being made holy all belong to one family. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them His brothers and sisters.

12 He says, “I will tell My family about Your name; in the middle of the congregation I will praise You.”

13 He also says, “I will put My trust in Him,” and, “Here I am with the children God gave Me.”

14 Since those children share flesh and blood, Jesus shared that same humanity. Through death He broke the power of the one who held the power of death, the devil.

15 He set free everybody who spent their whole life trapped by the fear of death.

16 Clearly, He did not come to rescue angels; He came to help Abraham’s descendants.

17 So He had to become like His brothers and sisters in every way, so He could be a merciful and faithful High Priest before God and make atonement for the people’s sins.

18 Because He suffered when He was tempted, He knows how to help us when temptation hits.
