Deuteronomy 29

Moses Reminds Israel of the Covenant

1 These the words of the covenant Moses laid out with the people of Israel in Moab, This was besides the one God made with them at Mount Sinai.

2 Moses called all Israel together and said, “You all saw with your own eyes what God did in Egypt, to Pharaoh, his people, and his whole country.”

3 “You saw the crazy miracles, signs, and wonders He pulled off.”

4 “But even with all that, God has not enabled you all to fully get it yet, your eyes have not been opened, and your heart is not locked in.”

5 “For 40 years, I led you all in the wilderness. Your clothes never fell apart, and your shoes never wore out.”

6 “You did not eat bread or drink wine or liquor, God provided everything, so you would know He is the real one.”

7 “When we got to this land, Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan came out to fight, And we dropped both of them.”

8 “We took their land and gave it to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh.”

9 “So keep the words of this covenant and live by them, that is how you prosper in everything you do.”

Everyone Is Accountable to the Covenant

10 All of you stand here today before the Lord, your leaders, your elders, your officers, your kids, your wives, and even the foreigners among you.

11 Even the ones who chop your wood and carry your water, everybody is included.

12 You are here to make it official, to lock in with the Lord through this covenant.

13 God is making you His people today, He is your God, just like He promised your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

14 And this is not just for you all here right now…

15 It is also for your kids and future generations, even the ones not born yet.

A Warning Against Turning Away

16 You all know how we lived in Egypt and passed through other nations. You saw their ways.

17 You saw their nasty idols made of wood, stone, silver, and gold, they do not mean nothing.

18 So make sure nobody here, man, woman, family, or tribe, turns away from God and starts chasing other gods. Do not let any root of bitterness grow and spread poison.

19 Do not be that person who hears this warning and thinks, “I will be good even if I go my own way.” That is a lie, that brings disaster.

20 God will not forgive someone like that. His anger going to burn, and every curse in this book will land on them. Their name going to be wiped out.

21 God will separate them from His people and hit them with the curses written in this Book of the Law.

God’s Judgment Will Be a Lesson to Others

22 When future generations, your kids or foreigners, see how the land got wrecked, They will ask, “Why did the Lord do this, Why so much heat?”

23 They will see a land burned up and trashed, Nothing grows, looks like Sodom and Gomorrah, straight smoke.

24 People going to say, “It is because they broke the covenant they made with God.”

25 “They turned away and worshiped other gods, ones they did not even know, stuff God never gave them.”

26 “They bowed down and served fake gods, and that made the Lord furious.”

27 So He poured out His curse, His anger, and hit the land with everything written in this book.

28 God uprooted them and threw them into another land, just like it happened.

Some Things Are Hidden, but This Word Is Ours

29 Some stuff God keeps to Himself, But what He revealed in this Law, That belongs to us and our kids forever, so we can live by it.
