From Grief to Comeback

1 Word got out fast: “The king is crying his heart out over Absalom.”

2 So what should have been a victory celebration turned into a funeral, everybody heard how broken David was.

3 His army came back like they lost, sneaking into town ashamed.

4 The king covered his face and cried, “My son Absalom! My son!”

Joab Checks the King

5 Joab went in and said, “Look, you making your soldiers feel like dirt. These the ones who just saved your life and your whole fam.”

6 “You love those who hate you and hate those who love you. If Absalom was alive and we were all dead, you would be fine with it.”

7 “Now get up, go out there, and show love to your people. If not, you will lose everyone by nightfall. That is real talk.”

David Comes Out

8 So the king got up and sat in the city gate. Word spread quick: “The king is in the gate!” And everybody came out to see him. Meanwhile, Israel had scattered and gone home.

Israel Debates David’s Return

9 All across Israel, people were talking: “David saved us from our enemies, but bounced when Absalom came.

10 Now Absalom is dead, why are we not bringing David back as king?”

11 David sent messengers to the elders of Judah: “Why are y’all the last to bring me back when I am your blood?”

12 “You my own tribe, you all should be leading the charge.”

13 He told Amasa (who led Absalom’s army), “You my new general now, replacing Joab. May God strike me down if I do not make it happen.”

Judah Steps Up

14 David’s message moved the hearts of everyone in Judah. They sent word: “Come on back, King.”

15 So David started heading back, and reached the Jordan River. Judah came down to meet him and help him cross.

Shimei Tries to Make Peace

16 Shimei (the dude who cussed David out) came from Bahurim quick,

17 With a thousand men from Benjamin. Ziba (Saul’s old servant) and his sons were with him too.

18 They crossed the Jordan to help David. Shimei fell at David’s feet and begged.

19 He said, “Please do not remember what I did when you left Jerusalem. I messed up bad.”

20 “I know I was wrong, that is why I am the first one here to welcome you back.”

21 Abishai said, “Should we not kill him, He cursed the Lord’s anointed!”

22 David said, “Man, what is it with you sons of Zeruiah? Today is not a day for killing. I am back as king, so let us not spill more blood.”

23 Then the king told Shimei, “You are not going to die.” And he gave his word.

Mephibosheth Shows Up

24 Mephibosheth came too, had not trimmed his beard, washed his clothes, or cared for his feet since David left.

25 When he met the king, David said, “Why did you not roll with me?”

26 He said, “Ziba lied on me. I told him to saddle a donkey, but he left me and told you lies.”

27 “You like an angel of God, so do what you think is right.”

28 “I do not deserve nothing, but you let me eat at your table. I am just glad you are back.”

29 David said, “You and Ziba split the land.”

30 Mephibosheth said, “He can have it all. I am just happy you are home safe.”

Barzillai Honored

31 Barzillai the old man from Rogelim came to help David cross the Jordan.

32 He was 80 years old, rich, and had taken care of David in Mahanaim.

33 David said, “Come live with me, I will take care of you.”

34 Barzillai said, “I am too old to be moving around.”

35 “I am 80. Cannot taste food, cannot hear music, do not trouble yourself.”

36 “I will walk with you to the river, then I am going home.”

37 “Let me go back to die in my own city, near my parents’ graves. But take my boy Chimham, let him go with you.”

38 David said, “Cool. Chimham will roll with me, and I will bless him like you said.”

39 Then the king kissed Barzillai, said goodbye, and crossed the river. Judah escorted him across.

Tension Between Tribes

40 The king went to Gilgal. Chimham was with him. Judah and half of Israel brought him across.

41 Then the men of Israel said, “Why did Judah get to bring the king back without us?”

42 Judah said, “He is our relative, that is why. We did not get nothing out of it.”

43 But Israel said, “We got ten tribes to your one. We got more claim to the king. Why you ignore us,” But Judah’s words hit harder, and Israel backed off.
