Psalms 59
Read Psalms 59 in clear, relatable modern language.
A Prayer for Protection
1 My God, save me from my enemies; Hold me up from those who get up against me.
2 Save me from the evil-doers, And rescue me from the bloodthirsty dudes.
3 Because look, they are hiding to take my life; Strong dudes got together against me. There is no wrong, there is no sin in me, Lord.
4 I did nothing wrong, but they run and get ready; Wake up and meet me and look!
5 Lord God of armies, God of Israel, Get up and visit all the nations; Do not show grace to any of the evil, two-faced dudes.
A Cry Against Their Schemes
6 They come back at night, they howl like dogs, And they go around the city.
7 Look, they talk trash with their mouths; Swords are in their lips, because who is going to hear,
8 But You, Lord, You are going to laugh at them; You are going to clown all the nations.
9 My Strength, I will wait on You, because God is my fortress.
10 My God in His grace will meet me; God will let me look at my enemies’ defeat.
A Final Plea for Justice
11 Do not kill them, so my people do not forget. Make them wander around with Your strength, And bring them down, Lord our shield.
12 The sin of their mouth is the words of their lips; Let them be caught in their pride, And for the curse and lies they talk.
13 Finish them off in wrath, finish them, so they are gone, So they know that God rules in Jacob To the ends of the earth.
A Song of Praise
14 They come back at night, they howl like dogs, And they go around the city.
15 They wander around for food, And they are not full, so they stay all night.
16 But me, I will sing about Your strength; I will cheer out loud about Your grace in the morning; because You were my fortress And a safe spot in my day of trouble.
17 My strength, I will sing praises to You, because God is my fortress, the God of my grace.
