Psalms 109
Read Psalms 109 in clear, relatable modern language.
A Prayer Against a Deceitful Enemy
God of my praise, do not be quiet!
Because the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the fake Are open against me; They spoke against me with a lying tongue.
They also surrounded me with words of hate And fought me for no reason.
In return for my love, they came at me, But I was in prayer.
So they gave me evil for good, And hate for my love.
A Curse on the Enemy
Put a wicked dude over him, And let an enemy stand at his right hand.
When he is judged, let him be found guilty, And let his prayer be sin.
Let his days be few; Let another dude take his spot.
Let his kids be orphans, And his wife a widow.
Let his kids wander and beg; Let them look for food far from their ruined homes.
Let the lender get all his stuff, And let strangers rob his hard work.
Do not let there be anyone to keep showing him grace, And do not let anyone feel for his fatherless kids.
Let his family be wiped out; In the next generation let their name be gone.
Let the wrong of his dads be remembered by the Lord, And do not let the sin of his mom be wiped out.
Let them always be in front of the Lord, And let Him cut off their memory from the earth.
A Final Plea
Because he did not remember to show loyal grace, But he chased the broke and needy dude And the brokenhearted to kill him.
He loved cursing, so it hit him; He did not love blessing, so it got far from him.
He put on cursing like a jacket, And it came into his body like water, And like oil in his bones.
Let it be to him like the jacket that covers him, And like the belt that is always on him.
Let this be the payback to my haters from the Lord, And to those who talk evil against my soul.
A Confession of Trust
But You, Lord God, do right by me for Your name’s sake; because Your loyal grace is good, save me.
Because I am broke and needy, And my heart is hit inside me.
I am gone like a shadow when it gets long; I am pushed away like a locust.
My knees are weak from fasting; My flesh is without fat.
I also became a diss to them; When they see me, they shake their heads.
Help me, Lord my God; Save me in Your loyal grace.
So they can know that this is Your hand; That You, Lord, did it.
They can curse, but You bless; When they get up, they will be shamed, But Your servant will be happy.
Let my haters be covered with disrespect, And let them cover themselves with their own shame like a jacket.
I will thank the Lord big-time with my mouth; I will praise Him in the middle of the crowd.
Because He stands at the right hand of the needy, To save him from those who judge his soul.
