Obadiah 1

Judgment on Edom

1 The vision of Obadiah. This is what the Lord GOD says about Edom: We heard a message from the LORD, and a messenger was sent among the nations saying, “Get up, let us rise against her for battle.”

2 “Look, I am making you small among the nations. You will be deeply despised.

3 The pride in your heart fooled you, you who live in the cracks of the rocks, whose home sits high, saying in your heart, ‘Who can bring me down to the ground?’

4 Even if you soar like an eagle and set your nest among the stars, I will bring you down from there,” says the LORD.

5 If thieves came to you, if robbers came at night, would they not only steal what they wanted, If grape pickers came to you, would they not leave some behind, But you will be wiped out completely.

6 How Esau will be searched out, his hidden treasures hunted down.

7 All your allies will push you to the border. The people at peace with you will trick you and overpower you. Those who eat your bread will set traps for you, and you will not even see it coming.

8 “On that day,” says the LORD, “will I not destroy the wise men of Edom and understanding from the mountain of Esau,

9 Your warriors, Teman, will be terrified, and everyone on the mountain of Esau will be cut down in the slaughter.”

Edom’s Violence Against Jacob

10 Because of violence against your brother Jacob, shame will cover you, and you will be cut off forever.

11 On the day you stood back while strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, you acted like one of them.

12 You should not have looked down on your brother in the day of his disaster, or celebrated when the people of Judah were destroyed. You should not have bragged in the day of their trouble.

13 You should not have entered the gate of My people in the day of their disaster, or looked down on their misery, or grabbed their wealth in the day of their disaster.

14 You should not have stood at the crossroads to cut down their escapees or handed over their survivors in the day of trouble.

The Day of the LORD

15 The day of the LORD is near for all nations. As you have done, it will be done to you. What you gave out will come back on your own head.

16 Just like you drank on My holy mountain, all the nations will drink continually. They will drink and swallow and be like they never existed.

17 But on Mount Zion there will be escape, and it will be holy. The house of Jacob will take back what belongs to them.

18 The house of Jacob will be a fire, the house of Joseph a flame, but the house of Esau will be stubble. They will burn them up and consume them, and no survivors will remain from the house of Esau,” says the LORD.

The Kingdom of the LORD

19 People from the Negev will take possession of the mountain of Esau, and people from the foothills will possess the land of the Philistines. They will take possession of the fields of Ephraim and Samaria, and Benjamin will possess Gilead.

20 The exiles of this army of the people of Israel will possess the land of the Canaanites as far as Zarephath, and the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad will possess the cities of the Negev.

21 Deliverers will go up on Mount Zion to rule over the mountain of Esau, and the kingdom will belong to the LORD.
