Urban Word Bible
Amos 9
Read Amos 9 in clear, relatable modern language.
Israel Will Not Escape Judgment
1 I saw the Lord standing by the altar, and He said, “Strike the tops of the pillars so the foundations shake. Bring it down on the heads of all of them. The ones left I will kill with the sword. Nobody will escape, nobody will get away.
2 Even if they dig down to the grave, My hand will pull them out. Even if they climb up to heaven, I will bring them down.
3 Even if they hide on top of Mount Carmel, I will search them out and take them from there. Even if they hide from Me at the bottom of the sea, I will command the serpent to bite them there.
4 Even if they go into captivity before their enemies, I will command the sword there, and it will kill them. I will keep My eyes on them for harm, not for good.”
5 The Lord GOD of armies touches the earth and it melts, and everyone living in it mourns. The whole land rises like the Nile and sinks again like the river of Egypt.
6 He builds His upper chambers in the heavens and sets His vault over the earth. He calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out over the earth. The LORD is His name.
7 “People of Israel, are you not like the Cushites to Me,” says the LORD. “Did I not bring Israel up from Egypt, the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Arameans from Kir,
8 Look, the eyes of the Lord GOD are on the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from the face of the earth. But I will not completely wipe out the house of Jacob,” says the LORD.
9 “I am giving the command, and I will shake the house of Israel among all the nations like grain shaken in a sieve, but not one pebble will fall to the ground.
10 All the sinners among My people will die by the sword, the ones saying, ‘Disaster will not come near us.’”
Restoration of Israel
11 “In that day I will raise up the fallen booth of David. I will repair its broken places, raise up its ruins, and rebuild it like in the days of old,
12 so they can take possession of what is left of Edom and all the nations called by My name,” says the LORD who does this.
13 “The days are coming,” says the LORD, “when the plowman will overtake the reaper and the one treading grapes will catch up to the one planting seed. The mountains will drip with sweet wine, and all the hills will flow with it.
14 I will restore the fortunes of My people Israel. They will rebuild ruined cities and live in them. They will plant vineyards and drink their wine. They will make gardens and eat their fruit.
15 I will plant them on their land, and they will never again be pulled up from the land I gave them,” says the LORD your God.
