Moses Records Every Stop on the Journey

1 This is the official travel record of the Israelites, from the time they left Egypt until they reached the land near Canaan. Moses and Aaron led them by the Lord’s command.

2 At God’s instruction, Moses wrote down each place they camped during their journey.

Leaving Egypt & Crossing the Red Sea

3 The Israelites left Ramses in Egypt on the 15th day of the first month, the morning after the first Passover. They marched out boldly, in full view of the Egyptians.

4 Meanwhile, the Egyptians were still burying their firstborn sons, whom the Lord had struck down. God had humbled all their false gods that day.

5 After leaving Ramses, Israel camped at Succoth.

6 Then they left Succoth and camped at Etham, at the edge of the desert.

7 From Etham, they turned back to Pi Hahiroth, near Baal Zephon, and camped by the Red Sea.

8 Then they crossed the Red Sea into the wilderness and traveled for three days through the Desert of Etham, finally camping at Marah.

9 From Marah, they went to Elim, a place with twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped there.

Traveling Through the Desert

10 Then they left Elim and camped by the Red Sea.

11 From there, they traveled to the Desert of Sin.

12 Then they camped at Dophkah.

13 From Dophkah, they moved to Alush.

14 From Alush, they camped at Rephidim, where there was no water to drink.

Arriving at Mount Sinai & Beyond

15 They left Rephidim and camped in the Desert of Sinai (where they got the Ten Commandments).

16 Then they left Sinai and camped at Kibroth Hattaavah.

17 From there, they moved to Hazeroth.

18 Then they camped at Rithmah.

19 Then they camped at Rimmon Perez.

20 Next, they camped at Libnah.

21 Then they camped at Rissah.

22 From there, they camped at Kehelathah.

23 Next stop: Mount Shepher.

24 Then they camped at Haradah.

25 Next, they camped at Makheloth.

26 Then they camped at Tahath.

27 From Tahath, they camped at Terah.

28 Next stop: Mithkah.

29 Then they camped at Hashmonah.

30 Then they moved to Moseroth.

31 From there, they camped at Bene Jaakan.

32 Next stop: Hor Haggidgad.

33 Then they camped at Jotbathah.

34 From there, they camped at Abronah.

35 Next stop: Ezion Geber.

36 Then they camped in the wilderness of Zin, at Kadesh.

Miriam Dies & Aaron Passes His Role to Eleazar

37 They left Kadesh and camped at Mount Hor, near the border of Edom.

38 It was here that Aaron died. The Lord had told Moses that Aaron would die on Mount Hor because of his disobedience at Meribah.

39 Aaron was 123 years old when he died on Mount Hor.

The Journey to Moab

40 The Canaanite king of Arad (who lived in the southern part of Canaan) heard that Israel was coming.

41 The Israelites left Mount Hor and camped at Zalmonah.

42 Then they camped at Punon.

43 Next, they camped at Oboth.

44 From there, they camped at Iye Abarim, near Moab.

45 Then they camped at Dibon Gad.

46 Next, they camped at Almon Diblathaim.

47 From there, they camped in the mountains of Abarim, near Mount Nebo.

48 Their final stop was the plains of Moab, near the Jordan River, across from Jericho.

God Gives Final Instructions Before Entering Canaan

49 They camped along the Jordan River, stretching from Beth Jeshimoth to Abel Shittim.

50 The Lord told Moses.

51 “Tell the Israelites: When you all cross the Jordan into Canaan?”

52 “Drive out all the people living there! Destroy their idols, statues, and high places!”

53 “Take the land and settle in it, because I am giving it to you as your inheritance.”

54 “Divide the land by tribes, the larger tribes get more land, the smaller ones get less. Use lots to make it fair.”

55 “But if you all do not drive out the people living there, they will become a problem! They will be like thorns in your sides, harassing you!”

56 “And if you do not obey Me, I will do to you what I planned to do to them!”
