Matthew 1

Jesus’ Family Line and His Birth

1 This is the fam tree of Jesus, the Messiah. He came from David’s line and Abraham’s line.

2 It started with Abraham, who had Isaac, then Isaac had Jacob, and Jacob had Judah and his brothers.

3 Judah had Perez and Zerah with Tamar. Then came Hezron, then Ram.

4 Ram had Amminadab, Amminadab had Nahshon, and Nahshon had Salmon.

5 Salmon had Boaz with Rahab. Boaz had Obed with Ruth. Obed had Jesse.

6 Jesse had David, the king. David had Solomon with Bathsheba, who used to be Uriah’s wife.

7 Solomon had Rehoboam. Then came Abijah, then Asa.

8 Asa had Jehoshaphat, then Joram, and then Uzziah.

9 Uzziah had Jotham, Jotham had Ahaz, and Ahaz had Hezekiah.

10 Hezekiah had Manasseh, Manasseh had Amon, and Amon had Josiah.

11 Josiah had Jeconiah and his brothers around the time they got exiled to Babylon.

12 After Babylon, Jeconiah had Shealtiel, and Shealtiel had Zerubbabel.

13 Zerubbabel had Abihud, Abihud had Eliakim, and Eliakim had Azor.

14 Azor had Zadok, Zadok had Akim, and Akim had Elihud.

15 Elihud had Eleazar, Eleazar had Matthan, and Matthan had Jacob.

16 Jacob had Joseph, who married Mary. Mary gave birth to Jesus, the Messiah.

17 So, there were 14 generations from Abraham to David, 14 from David to Babylon, and 14 from Babylon to Jesus.

18 This is how Jesus was born: Mary, His mom, was engaged to Joseph, but before they got together, she was pregnant by the Holy Spirit.

19 Joseph, her man, was a good dude and did not want to embarrass her, so he planned to end things quietly.

20 While he was thinking about it, an angel came to him in a dream and said, “Joe, do not be scared to take Mary as your wife. The baby in her is from the Holy Spirit.”

21 “She is going to have a son. Name Him Jesus, because He is going to save His people from their sins.”

22 This fulfilled what the prophet said:

23 “A virgin will have a baby, and they will call Him Emmanuel, which means ‘God with us.’”

24 Joseph woke up and did what the angel said. He married Mary.

25 But he did not sleep with her until after she had Jesus, and they named Him just like the angel said.
