Read Leviticus 15 in clear, relatable modern language.

Unclean Discharges from a Man

The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron.

Tell the Israelites, if a man has an unusual bodily discharge, he is unclean.

His discharge makes him unclean whether it keeps flowing or is blocked.

Anything he lies on or sits on while he has the discharge is unclean.

Anyone who touches his bed must wash their clothes, bathe in water, and be unclean until evening.

Anyone who sits where he sat must wash their clothes, bathe in water, and be unclean until evening.

Anyone who touches his body must wash their clothes, bathe in water, and be unclean until evening.

If he spits on someone, that person must wash their clothes, bathe in water, and be unclean until evening.

Any saddle or seat he sits on while unclean is also unclean.

Anyone who touches anything he sat on will be unclean until evening. If they carry any of his things, they must wash their clothes, bathe in water, and be unclean until evening.

If the man touches someone without first washing his hands, that person must wash their clothes, bathe in water, and be unclean until evening.

If he touches a clay pot, it must be broken. If it is a wooden object, it must be washed.

When the discharge stops, he must wait seven days, wash his clothes, and bathe in fresh water. Then he will be clean.

On the eighth day, he must bring two doves or two pigeons to the priest at the entrance of the Tabernacle.

The priest will sacrifice one bird as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering. The priest will make atonement for him before the Lord.

Normal Discharges from a Man

If a man has a regular emission of semen, he must bathe his whole body in water and be unclean until evening.

Any clothing or leather that has semen on it must be washed with water and will be unclean until evening.

If a man sleeps with a woman and has an emission of semen, both of them must bathe in water and be unclean until evening.

A Woman’s Menstrual Period

If a woman has her menstrual period, she will be unclean for seven days. Anyone who touches her will be unclean until evening.

Anything she lies on or sits on during her period is unclean.

Anyone who touches her bed must wash their clothes, bathe in water, and be unclean until evening.

Anyone who touches anything she sat on must wash their clothes, bathe in water, and be unclean until evening.

If someone touches her bed or anything she sat on, they will be unclean until evening.

If a man sleeps with her and her blood touches him, he will be unclean for seven days, and any bed he lies on will be unclean.

Unusual Discharges from a Woman

If a woman has an unusual blood discharge that lasts longer than her normal period, she is unclean as long as the bleeding continues.

Any bed she lies on will be unclean, just like during her period. Anything she sits on will also be unclean.

Anyone who touches her or anything she sits on must wash their clothes, bathe in water, and be unclean until evening.

When the bleeding stops, she must wait seven days, then she will be clean.

On the eighth day, she must bring two doves or two pigeons to the priest at the entrance of the Tabernacle.

The priest will offer one bird as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering. He will make atonement for her before the Lord.

Why These Rules Matter

Tell the Israelites to stay clean so they do not make My Tabernacle unclean and die because of it.

These are the rules for men with discharges, emissions of semen,

For women with their periods or unusual discharges, and for men who sleep with a woman during her period.
