Joshua 2

Read Joshua 2 in clear, relatable modern language.

Spies Sent to Jericho

1 Joshua secretly sent two dudes from Shittim to scope out Jericho. “Slide over there and see what is up,” he told them. They dipped into the city and posted up at a woman’s house - her name was Rahab, and she was a prostitute.

The King Finds Out

2 Somebody snitched to the king of Jericho: “Listen, some Israelites in the city - they scoping out the spot.”

3 So the king sent word to Rahab: “Bring out the men that came to your house - they spies!”

Rahab Hides the Spies

4 But Rahab had already hidden the two men. She told the king’s guys, “Yeah, they came through, but I did not know where they were from.”

5 “They dipped out around sunset, right before the city gates closed. I do not know where they went - but if you all hurry, maybe you can catch them.” (She was capping - they were up on her roof.)

6 She had hidden them under stacks of flax up on the rooftop.

7 The king’s men chased after them toward the Jordan, And as soon as they left, the gate got shut tight.

Rahab’s Confession of Faith

8 Before the spies laid down to sleep, Rahab came up to the roof to talk.

9 She said, “I know God already gave you all this land. Everybody here scared of you all - we shook.”

10 “We heard what your God did - How He dried up the Red Sea when you all left Egypt, And how you all crushed Sihon and Og on the other side of the Jordan.”

11 “When we heard it, our hearts melted. Nobody here got any fight left - because we know your God is the real deal - He runs heaven and earth.”

Rahab Strikes a Deal

12 “So please, swear to me by your God - Show me the same love I just showed you all. Promise me you will spare my family.”

13 “Save my mom, dad, brothers, sisters - everybody in my house. Keep us safe when you all take the city.”

14 The men told her, “Bet. If you do not snitch, We got you. When God gives us the city, we will treat you and your people right.”

Rahab Helps Them Escape

15 Her crib was built into the city wall, So she let them down through the window with a rope.

16 She said, “Run to the hills and hide for three days - By then the search crew will stop looking.”

17 The spies told her, “Aight - but you must do your part or this deal’s off.”

18 “When we come back, hang this red cord from your window. Bring all your people inside this house.”

19 “If they outside when we show up - that is on them. But if they in your house and get hurt, we take the blame.”

20 “But if you talk about this to anybody, the deal is dead.”

21 She said, “Say less.” Then she tied the red rope in her window.

Spies Return to Joshua

22 The spies laid low in the hills for three days, Till the search squad gave up and came back.

23 Then they went back to Joshua and told him everything Rahab did for them.

24 They said, “God really gave us the land - The whole city terrified of us.”
