John 21

Read John 21 in clear, relatable modern language.

Jesus Shows Up by the Water Again

1 After this, Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, and it went down like this.

2 Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others were together.

3 Simon Peter said, “I am going fishing.” They said, “We going with you.” They went out and got in the boat, but that whole night they caught nothing.

4 When morning came, Jesus was standing on the shore, but the disciples did not realize it was Him.

5 Jesus called out, “Children, you got any fish,” They answered, “No.”

6 He said, “Throw the net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” So they threw it, and now they could not even pull it in because of the amount of fish.

7 That disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” When Peter heard that, he threw on his outer garment and jumped into the water.

8 The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, because they were not far from shore.

Breakfast with Jesus

9 When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire already set up, with fish on it and bread.

10 Jesus said, “Bring some of the fish you just caught.”

11 Simon Peter went up and pulled the net to land, full of large fish, 153 of them, and even with that many, the net did not tear.

12 Jesus said, “Come eat breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask Him, “Who are You?” because they knew it was the Lord.

13 Jesus came, took the bread, and gave it to them, and the fish too.

14 This was now the third time Jesus showed Himself to the disciples after He was raised from the dead.

Peter Gets Restored

15 When they finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these,” Peter said, “Yes, Lord, You know I love You.” Jesus said, “Feed My lambs.”

16 He said to him again, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me,” He said, “Yes, Lord, You know I love You.” Jesus said, “Shepherd My sheep.”

17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me,” Peter was hurt because He asked him the third time, “Do you love Me?” and he said, “Lord, You know everything, You know I love You.” Jesus said, “Feed My sheep.”

18 “For real, when you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go wherever you wanted, but when you get old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and take you where you do not want to go.”

19 He said this to show the kind of death Peter would glorify God with. After saying this, He told him, “Follow Me.”

Stay in Your Lane

20 Peter turned around and saw the disciple Jesus loved following them, the one who had leaned back on His chest at the supper and asked who would betray Him.

21 When Peter saw him, he said, “Lord, what about him?”

22 Jesus said, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you, You follow Me.”

23 Because of this, a rumor spread among the brothers that that disciple would not die, but Jesus did not say he would not die, only, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?”

Final Word

24 This is the disciple who is testifying about these things and wrote them, and we know his testimony is true.

25 There are also many other things Jesus did, and if every one of them were written down, I do not think the world itself could contain all the books that would be written.
