The Tomb Is Empty

1 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw the stone already taken away.

2 She ran to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They took the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they put Him.”

3 So Peter and the other disciple took off running to the tomb.

4 They were both running, butthe other disciple outran Peter and got there first.

5 He bent down and looked in and saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.

6 Then Simon Peter came, went straight in, and saw the linen cloths lying there,

7 and the face cloth that had been on His head, not lying with the others, but folded up in a place by itself.

8 Then the other disciple went in, and he saw and believed.

9 They still did not fully understand the Scripture that He had to rise again from the dead.

10 So the disciples went back home.

Mary Sees the Risen Jesus

11 But Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she was crying, she bent down and looked into the tomb

12 and saw two angels in white sitting where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and one at the feet.

13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you crying,” She said, “Because they took away my Lord, and I do not know where they put Him.”

14 After saying this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know it was Him.

15 Jesus said, “Woman, why are you crying, Who are you looking for,” Thinking He was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you carried Him away, tell me where you put Him, and I will take Him.”

16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher).

17 Jesus said, “Stop clinging to Me, because I have not yet gone up to the Father. But go to My brothers and tell them, ‘I am going up to My Father and your Father, My God and your God.’”

18 Mary Magdalene went and told the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and she told them everything He said to her.

Jesus Appears to the Disciples

19 That evening, the first day of the week, the disciples were together with the doors locked because they were afraid. Jesus came and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.”

20 After saying this, He showed them His hands and His side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

21 So Jesus said again, “Peace be with you. Just like the Father sent Me, I am sending you.”

22 After saying this, He breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.

23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you hold them, they are held.”

Thomas Needs to See It

24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came.

25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in His hands, put my finger in the mark, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”

26 Eight days later, His disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, even though the doors were locked, stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”

27 Then He said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, see My hands, and put your hand into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believe.”

28 Thomas answered, “My Lord and my God!”

29 Jesus said, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who did not see and still believed.”

Why This Was Written

30 Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples that are not written in this book,

31 but these have been written so you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.
