John 13

Jesus Washes Their Feet

1 Before the Passover feast, Jesus knew His time had come to leave this world and go back to the Father. Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them all the way to the end.

2 During supper, the devil had already put it in the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him.

3 Jesus knew the Father had given everything into His hands, that He came from God and was going back to God,

4 so He got up from supper, laid aside His outer clothing, took a towel, and wrapped it around Himself.

5 Then He poured water into a basin and started washing the disciples’ feet and wiping them with the towel He had around Him.

6 He came to Simon Peter, and Peter said, “Lord, You washing my feet,”

7 Jesus answered, “What I am doing you do not understand right now, but you will later.”

8 Peter said, “You will never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”

9 Simon Peter said, “Lord, then wash not just my feet, but my hands and my head too.”

10 Jesus said, “The one who has already bathed only needs to wash his feet, he is completely clean. And you are clean, but not all of you.”

11 Because He knew who was going to betray Him, that is why He said not all of you are clean.

A Lesson in Real Humility

12 After He had washed their feet, He put His clothes back on, sat down again, and said, “Do you understand what I just did for you,

13 You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, because that is who I am.

14 So if I, your Lord and Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.”

15 “I gave you an example so you should do just like I did for you.

16 For real, a servant is not greater than his master, and one who is sent is not greater than the one who sent him.

17 If you know these things, you are blessed if you actually do them.”

One of You All Is Going to Betray Me

18 “I am not talking about all of you. I know the ones I chose, but this is to fulfill Scripture, ‘He who eats My bread has lifted his heel against Me.’

19 I am telling you now before it happens, so when it does happen, you will believe that I am He.”

20 “For real, the one who receives whoever I send receives Me, and the one who receives Me receives the One who sent Me.”

21 After saying this, Jesus became troubled in spirit and said, “For real, one of you all is going to betray Me.”

22 The disciples started looking at each other, confused about who He was talking about.

23 One of the disciples, the one Jesus loved, was leaning close to Him.

24 So Simon Peter gestured to him, “Ask Him who He is talking about.”

25 So he leaned back and asked, “Lord, who is it?”

26 Jesus answered, “It is the one I give this piece of bread to after I dip it.” Then He dipped the bread and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.

27 After Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. So Jesus said to him, “What you are about to do, do it quickly.”

28 Nobody at the table understood why He said that to him.

29 Some thought since Judas had the money bag, Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the feast or to give something to the poor.

30 After receiving the bread, Judas went out immediately, and it was night.

A New Command, Real Love

31 When Judas had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him.

32 If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately.”

33 “Little children, I am with you a little while longer. You will look for Me, and just like I told the Jews, now I tell you, where I am going, you cannot come.”

34 “I am giving you a new command: love one another. Just like I have loved you, you also must love one another.

35 By this, everyone will know you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Peter Gets A Warning

36 Simon Peter said, “Lord, where are You going,” Jesus answered, “Where I am going, you cannot follow Me now, but you will follow later.”

37 Peter said, “Lord, why can I not follow You now, I will lay down my life for You.”

38 Jesus answered, “You will lay down your life for Me, For real, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”
