Job 22

Read Job 22 in clear, relatable modern language.

Eliphaz Calls Job Out

Then Eliphaz the Temanite spoke up,

“Listen, can a man really benefit God, Even a wise dude is not profitable to Him.

Do you think the Almighty gets excited if you are righteous, Or does He profit if you walk blameless,

You think He is checking you because you fear Him, Is this why He steps into court with you,

Nah, your wickedness is huge, and your sins got no end.

You have taken pledges from your brothers for no reason, stripped folks of clothes, leaving them cold.

You did not give water to the thirsty, or bread to the hungry.

You let the powerful keep the land, the VIPs lived in it.

You sent widows away empty, broke the arms of orphans.

That is why snares surround you, fear makes you shake.

Darkness blinds you, floods cover you.”

Eliphaz Describes God’s Greatness

“Is not God up in the highest heavens, Look at the stars way above.

But you say, ‘What does God know, Can He judge through deep darkness,

Thick clouds hide Him, He does not see, He just walks on the circle of the sky.’

Will you keep walking the old path wicked men took,

Who got snatched away before their time, their foundations washed away by a flood,

They said to God, ‘Step off, we do not need You,’

Yet He filled their houses with good things. But their plans are not the ones I will cosign.

The righteous see it, they are glad; the innocent mock them,

Saying, ‘Our enemies are cut off, their wealth devoured by fire.’”

Eliphaz Calls Job to Repent

“Listen, make peace with God, be cool with Him, good will come your way.

Take His Word, treasure His commands in your heart.

If you turn back to the Almighty, you will be built up. Remove sin from your crib.

Throw your gold in the dust, toss your fine gold in the rocks of the streams.

The Almighty will be your treasure, your stacks of silver.

Then you will delight in the Almighty, and lift your face to God.

You will pray to Him, He will hear, and you will keep your vows.

Whatever you decide, it will succeed, and light will shine on your path.

When men are humbled, you will say, ‘Lift them up,’ and He will save the lowly.

He will rescue even the guilty through the cleanness of your hands.”
