Favoritism Has No Place in the Family
1 My brothers and sisters, if you truly trust our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, stop judging people by status and appearance.
2 Suppose somebody walks into your gathering wearing expensive clothes and gold jewelry, while a poor person comes in wearing beat-up clothes.
3 If you show the dressed-up person special attention and give them the best seat, but tell the poor person, ‘Stand over there’ or ‘Sit down by my feet,’
4 have you not divided people into classes and turned yourselves into judges with evil motives,
5 Listen, my beloved family. Did not God choose people the world calls poor to become rich in faith and inherit the kingdom He promised to those who love Him,
6 But you all have dishonored the poor. Is it not usually the rich who exploit you and drag you into court,
7 Are they not the ones disrespecting the honorable name that was spoken over you,
8 If you really obey the royal law in Scripture, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’, you are doing right.
9 But when you show favoritism, you are committing sin, and God’s law exposes you as a lawbreaker.
10 Whoever keeps the whole law but breaks it at one point is still guilty of breaking the law.
11 The same God who said, ‘Do not commit adultery?’ also said, ‘Do not murder.’ You might avoid adultery, but if you murder, you are still a lawbreaker.
12 So speak and live like people who will be judged by the law that brings freedom.
13 Judgment without mercy is coming for anybody who refuses to show mercy. But mercy wins over judgment.
Real Faith Gets to Work
14 My brothers and sisters, what good is it if somebody claims to have faith but their life never shows it, Can that kind of faith save them,
15 Suppose a brother or sister has no proper clothes and nothing to eat that day.
16 If one of you all says, ‘Go in peace, stay warm, and eat good,’ but gives them nothing their body needs, what good did those words do,
17 Faith works the same way. If it never produces action, it is dead all by itself.
18 Somebody might say, ‘You have got faith, and I have got works.’ Show me faith with no action, and I will show you my faith by what I do.
19 You believe there is one God, Good. Even demons believe that, and they shake with fear.
20 Do you really need proof, foolish person, that faith with no action is useless,
21 Was not our father Abraham shown to be righteous by what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar,
22 You see how his faith and his actions moved together. His faith reached maturity through what he did.
23 That fulfilled the Scripture saying, ‘Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness,’ and he was called God’s friend.
24 So you see that a person’s claim of faith is shown genuine by action, not by empty belief alone.
25 Was not Rahab the prostitute also shown righteous by her actions when she welcomed the messengers and helped them escape by another road,
26 Just as a body without the spirit is dead, faith without action is dead too.
