James 1

Read James 1 in clear, relatable modern language.

Greeting

1 This is James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ. I am writing to God’s twelve tribes scattered all over the place. Greetings, family.

Trials Build Endurance

2 My brothers and sisters, when all kinds of trouble hit you, choose to see it as a reason for joy.

3 You already know that when your faith gets tested, endurance starts growing in you.

4 Let endurance finish its work, so you can become mature, complete, and not lacking what you need.

5 If any of you all need wisdom, ask God. He gives generously to everybody without clowning or shaming them, and He will give it to you.

6 But ask with faith, not doubting. A person who keeps doubting is like a wave getting pushed and tossed around by the wind.

7 Somebody living like that should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.

8 They are divided inside, trying to go two directions, and unstable in everything they do.

What Really Lasts

9 Believers with little in this world can celebrate the high position God has given them.

10 But rich believers should stay humble, because earthly success fades away like a wildflower in the grass.

11 The sun comes up blazing, dries out the grass, and the flower drops dead with all its beauty gone. Rich people and everything they chase will fade the same way.

12 Blessed is the person who stays faithful under pressure. After standing the test, they will receive the crown of life God promised to those who love Him.

Where Temptation Comes From

13 When you are tempted, do not say, ‘God is tempting me.’ Evil cannot tempt God, and God does not tempt anybody with evil.

14 Temptation happens when our own desires pull us away and bait us into the trap.

15 Then desire gets pregnant and gives birth to sin. When sin grows all the way up, it produces death.

16 Do not get played, my beloved brothers and sisters.

17 Every good and perfect gift comes from above, straight from the Father who made the lights in heaven. He does not switch up or change like shifting shadows.

18 He chose to give us new birth through the word of truth, so we could be like the first and best part of everything He created.

Hear the Word and Live It

19 Understand this, my beloved family: be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.

20 Human anger does not produce the righteous life God desires.

21 So throw away every filthy habit and all the evil piling up around you. Humbly receive the word God planted in you, because it has the power to save your souls.

22 Do not just listen to the Word and fool yourselves. Put it into action.

23 Anybody who hears the Word but does not do it, it is like somebody checking their face in a mirror.

24 They look at themselves, walk away, and immediately forget what they saw.

25 But whoever looks closely into God’s perfect law that brings freedom, and keeps living by it instead of forgetting it, will be blessed in what they do.

26 If somebody thinks they are religious but cannot control their mouth, they are lying to their own heart, and their religion is empty.

27 Religion that is pure and clean before God our Father looks like this: caring for orphans and widows in their trouble, and refusing to let the world stain your life.
