Isaiah 14

The Lord Will Have Mercy on Jacob

1 The Lord is going to have mercy on Jacob again and choose Israel once more. He will settle them back in their own land, and outsiders will come join them, tagging along with the house of Jacob.

2 The nations will take them back to their homeland, and Israel will own those who once captured them. They will rule over their oppressors.

The Fall of the King of Babylon

3 When the Lord gives you rest from all your pain, stress, and hard labor, you will start talking trash to the king of Babylon.

4 You will say, “Man, the oppressor has been shut down! The city of violence is done for!”

5 The Lord broke the stick of the wicked, the scepter those rulers used to beat people down.

6 They struck nations in anger nonstop, crushed them without mercy. Now they are the ones brought low, no one fearing them anymore.

7 The whole earth is at peace now, quiet and calm. People breaking out in songs of joy.

8 Even the trees out here, the cypress and the cedars of Lebanon, are saying, “Since you been laid low, nobody is coming to cut us down anymore.”

9 Down below, the grave’s getting hyped to meet you. The dead kings are rising from their thrones, waiting to greet you when you show up.

10 They will all say, “You are weak like us now, You became one of us?”

11 Your pride has been buried with you, music stopped, maggots under you, worms covering you.

The Fall of Lucifer (Morning Star)

12 How you fallen from heaven, shining one, son of the morning! You have been thrown down to the ground, you who used to crush nations.

13 You said in your heart, “I will rise up to heaven, I will set my throne above God’s stars, and I will sit on the mount where the gods gather.”

14 “I will climb to the highest clouds and make myself like the Most High.”

15 But you getting brought down to the pit, the lowest parts of the grave.

16 People are going to look at you and say, “This the dude who made the earth tremble and shook kingdoms?”

17 “This the one who turned the world into a wasteland, tore down cities, and would not even let prisoners go home?”

18 All the kings of the nations rest in honor, each in their own grave,

19 But you, You got tossed out your grave like garbage, covered with the bodies of the slain, trampled like a dead branch.

20 You will not be buried with them. You ruined your land and slaughtered your own people. Nobody is going to remember your name.

21 Get ready to wipe out his kids because of their father’s sins. Do not let them rise up, take the land, and fill the world with their cities again.

Babylon’s Destruction

22 The Lord of Armies says, “I am stepping in against Babylon. I will cut off her name, her descendants, her whole line,” says the Lord.

23 “I will turn her into a swamp, a place for wild creatures. I will sweep her away with the broom of destruction,” says the Lord of Armies.

God’s Plan for Assyria

24 The Lord of Armies made a promise: “Just like I planned it, it is going to go down. What I decided is locked in.”

25 “I will crush the Assyrians in My land; on My mountains I will stomp them down. My people will be freed from their yoke, the burden off their shoulders.”

26 “This is My plan for the whole earth, and My hand is stretched out over all nations.”

27 The Lord of Armies has spoken, who can stop it, His hand is stretched out, who can turn it back,

Judgment on Philistia

28 This message came in the year King Ahaz died.

29 Do not celebrate, Philistia, just because the rod that struck you is broken. From that snake will come an even deadlier one, a viper that spits fire.

30 The poor is going to eat and rest in safety, but I will kill your roots with famine, and what is left of you will die.

31 Cry out, city! Melt in fear, Philistia! Smoke is coming from the north, no one will miss their mark.

32 When people ask, “What is the Lord is going to do?” tell them this: “He is building up Zion, and His suffering people will find refuge in Him.”
