Hebrews 4

God’s Rest Is Still Open

1 God’s promise of entering His rest is still open, so let us be careful that none of you comes up short.

2 We heard the good news just like they did, but the message did them no good because they did not receive it with faith.

3 Those of us who believe enter that rest. God said, “In My anger I swore they would never enter My rest,” even though His work was finished from the foundation of the world.

4 Somewhere Scripture says about the seventh day, “God rested on the seventh day from all His work.”

5 And again He says, “They will never enter My rest.”

6 Since the rest is still available, and the first people who heard the good news missed it because they disobeyed,

7 God named another day: “Today.” Much later He said through David, “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.”

8 If Joshua had given them the final rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.

9 So a Sabbath rest is still waiting for God’s people.

10 Whoever enters God’s rest also rests from their work, just as God rested from His.

11 Let us make every effort to enter that rest, so nobody falls by following the same pattern of disobedience.

12 God’s word is alive and active, sharper than any double-edged sword. It cuts deep enough to separate soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and it judges the thoughts and motives of the heart.

13 Nothing in creation is hidden from God. Everything lies uncovered before the eyes of the One to whom we must answer.

14 Since we have a great High Priest who passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold tightly to what we confess.

15 Our High Priest is not distant from our weakness. He was tempted in every way we are tempted, yet He never sinned.

16 So let us come boldly to the throne of grace. There we will receive mercy and find grace right when we need help.
