Judgment Against Tyre

Tyre Condemned

1 In the eleventh year, first month, first day, the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

2 “Son of man, because Tyre said about Jerusalem, ‘Aha! The gate of the peoples is broken; it has swung open to me. I will be filled now that she is laid waste,’

3 therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: Look, I am against you, Tyre. I will bring many nations against you, just like the sea brings up its waves.

4 They will destroy the walls of Tyre and tear down her towers. I will scrape her dirt from her and make her a bare rock.

5 She will be a place for spreading nets in the middle of the sea, for I have spoken,” declares the Lord GOD. “She will become plunder for the nations,

6 and her daughters on the mainland will be killed by the sword. Then they will know that I am the LORD.

Nebuchadnezzar Sent Against Tyre

7 For this is what the Lord GOD says: “Look, I am bringing King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon against Tyre from the north, the king of kings, with horses, chariots, cavalry, and a great army.

8 He will kill your daughters on the mainland with the sword. He will set up siege walls against you, build a ramp, and raise a shield against you.

9 He will direct the blows of his battering rams against your walls and tear down your towers with his weapons.

10 His horses will be so many that their dust will cover you. Your walls will shake at the noise of cavalry, wagons, and chariots when he enters your gates like men entering a breached city.

11 With the hooves of his horses he will trample all your streets. He will kill your people with the sword, and your mighty pillars will fall to the ground.

12 They will plunder your wealth, loot your merchandise, tear down your walls, and destroy your beautiful houses. They will throw your stones, timber, and rubble into the water.

13 I will silence the noise of your songs, and the sound of your harps will be heard no more.

14 I will make you a bare rock. You will be a place for spreading nets. You will never be rebuilt, for I the LORD have spoken,” declares the Lord GOD.

Tyre’s Fall Mourned

15 This is what the Lord GOD says to Tyre: “Will not the coastlands quake at the sound of your fall, when the wounded groan and slaughter happens in your midst,

16 All the princes of the sea will step down from their thrones, take off their robes, and strip away their embroidered garments. They will clothe themselves with trembling. They will sit on the ground, tremble every moment, and be appalled at you.

17 They will raise a lament over you and say to you, ‘How you have perished, you once-inhabited city, renowned on the seas, she who was strong on the sea, she and her people, who spread terror on all who lived there!

18 Now the coastlands tremble on the day of your fall; the islands in the sea are terrified at your collapse.’

19 For this is what the Lord GOD says: “When I make you a ruined city like cities that are no longer inhabited, when I bring the deep over you and great waters cover you,

20 then I will bring you down with those who go down to the pit, to the people of long ago. I will make you dwell in the lowest parts of the earth, like ancient ruins, with those who go down to the pit, so you will not be inhabited. But I will set glory in the land of the living.

21 I will bring terrors on you, and you will be no more. Though you are sought, you will never again be found,” declares the Lord GOD.
