Urban Word Bible
Deuteronomy 6
Read Deuteronomy 6 in clear, relatable modern language.
Obey God’s Commands & Be Blessed
1 Moses said, “These are the commands, laws, and instructions the Lord told me to teach you all, so you all can follow them in the land you all about to enter and take over.”
2 “If you respect the Lord and follow His commands, you and your children will live long and be blessed!”
3 “Listen, Israel! Follow these laws carefully so you can prosper in the land flowing with milk and honey, just like the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised!"
The Greatest Commandment
4 “Listen up, Israel! The Lord our God is one, there is no other!”
5 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and strength!”
6 “These commandments must be in your heart at all times!”
7 “Teach them to your kids! Talk about them when you sit at home, when you walk down the road, when you lie down, and when you wake up.”
8 “Tie them on your hands as a reminder and put them on your forehead!”
9 “Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates!”
Do Not Forget God When You Get Blessed
10 “When you all enter the land the Lord promised your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, you will live in cities you did not build.”
11 “You will have houses full of good things you did not fill, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive trees you did not plant. When you eat and are full?”
12 “Do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of slavery in Egypt!”
13 “Fear the Lord, worship Him only, and make your oaths in His Name.”
14 “Do not chase after other gods like the nations around you do!”
15 “The Lord is a jealous God! If you turn away from Him, He will wipe you out!”
Do Not Test God, Just Obey Him
16 “Do not test the Lord like you all did at Massah!”
17 “Obey His commands, laws, and rules!”
18 “Do what is right and good in God’s eyes, and He will bless you and give you victory over your enemies.”
19 “He will drive out the nations before you, just like He promised.”
Teach Your Children Why You Follow God
20 “One day, your kids will ask, ‘Why do we have all these laws?’”
21 “Tell them, ‘We were slaves in Egypt, but the Lord rescued us with His mighty hand!’”
22 “‘He sent great signs and plagues against Pharaoh and his whole country.’”
23 “‘Then He brought us out of Egypt and gave us this land He promised our ancestors.’”
24 “‘He commanded us to fear Him and obey His laws so we could live and be blessed!’”
25 “‘If we obey, we will be considered righteous in His eyes.’”
