Deuteronomy 5

Read Deuteronomy 5 in clear, relatable modern language.

Moses Reminds Israel of God’s Covenant

Moses called all of Israel together and said, “Listen up! Pay attention to these commands so you all can follow them!”

“The Lord made a covenant with us at Mount Sinai.”

“This was not just for our ancestors, it is for all of us standing here today!”

“God spoke to you all directly from the fire on the mountain.”

“I stood between you and the Lord that day, because you all were too scared to go near the fire. This is what He said:”

The Ten Commandments

“I am the Lord your God, the One who brought you out of Egypt, out of slavery.”

“You must not have any other gods before Me.”

“Do not make any carved images or idols, no statues, no symbols of anything in heaven, on earth, or in the sea.”

“Do not bow down or worship them, because I, the Lord, am a jealous God. I punish those who hate Me down to the third and fourth generation.”

“But I show love to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commands.”

“Do not misuse My Name! If you do, I will not let it slide.”

“Keep the Sabbath holy, just like I commanded you.”

“Work six days and do everything you need to do?”

“But the seventh day is the Lord’s Sabbath. No work! Not you, your kids, your servants, your animals, or even foreigners living with you. Let everybody rest.”

“Remember, you all were slaves in Egypt, but I brought you out with My power. That is why I command you to rest on the Sabbath.”

“Honor your father and mother, so you can live long and be blessed in the land the Lord is giving you.”

“Do not murder.”

“Do not commit adultery.”

“Do not steal.”

“Do not lie on people or give false testimony.”

“Do not crave or desire your neighbor’s wife. And do not be greedy for his house, land, servants, ox, donkey, or anything else that belongs to him.”

Israel Was Terrified When God Spoke

“That is everything the Lord said in a loud voice from the fire, cloud, and thick darkness at Mount Sinai. He wrote it on two stone tablets and gave them to me.”

“When you all heard His voice from the fire, you got scared and told your leaders and elders?”

“‘We saw God’s glory and heard His voice! And we are still alive! This is crazy!’”

“‘But we cannot handle hearing His voice again, we might die!’”

“‘Who has ever heard God speak out of fire like this and lived!’”

“‘Moses, you go talk to God for us! Then come back and tell us what He says, and we will do it.’”

God Agrees with the People

“The Lord heard what you all said and told me, ‘They spoke well.’”

“‘If only they would always have this heart, to fear Me and keep My commands! Then they and their children would be blessed forever!’”

“‘Tell them to go back to their tents.’”

“‘But you, Moses, stay here with Me, and I will give you all My laws and commands for them to follow.’”

Moses’ Final Warning: Obey & Prosper

“So be careful to do everything the Lord commanded you. Do not turn left or right, just follow His path.”

“Walk in His ways, and you will live long and be blessed in the land He is giving you!”
