Deuteronomy 11
Read Deuteronomy 11 in clear, relatable modern language.
Love & Obey God, Remember What He Did
1 “Love the Lord your God and always obey His commands, laws, and rules!”
2 “You all saw firsthand what the Lord did, not your kids! They did not experience His discipline and His mighty power.”
3 “You all saw the miracles He did in Egypt, how He sent plagues against Pharaoh and his whole country.”
4 “You all saw how He drowned the Egyptian army in the Red Sea when they were chasing you!”
5 “You all saw how He took care of you in the wilderness all these years!”
6 “And remember what happened to Dathan and Abiram, when the earth opened up and swallowed them, their families, and everything they owned!”
7 “You all saw all this with your own eyes! That is why you need to obey!”
If You Obey, You Will Be Blessed in the Promised Land
8 “Obey all these commands, so you all will be strong and take the land you are about to enter!”
9 “If you obey, you will live long in this land flowing with milk and honey, just like God promised your ancestors.”
10 “This land is not like Egypt, where you had to water your crops yourself.”
11 “This land has mountains and valleys, and the rain comes straight from the heavens.”
12 “The Lord takes care of this land! His eyes are always on it, from the start of the year to the end.”
If You Obey, You Will Prosper, If You Do Not, It Will Not Rain
13 “If you all love the Lord, serve Him, and obey His commands?”
14 “Then He will send rain at the right time, so you will have plenty of grain, wine, and oil.”
15 “He will provide grass for your livestock, and you will have everything you need!”
16 “But be careful! Do not turn away from God and start worshiping fake gods!”
17 “If you do, the Lord will shut up the sky, no rain, no harvest. You all will starve and be wiped out from this land.”
Teach These Commands to Your Kids
18 “Take these commands to heart, tie them on your hands as a sign, and put them on your forehead!”
19 “Teach them to your kids! Talk about them when you sit at home, when you walk, when you go to bed, and when you wake up!”
20 “Write them on your doorposts and gates!”
21 “If you all do this, you and your kids will live long in the land, just like the Lord promised.”
If You Obey, No One Will Stop You
22 “Obey these commands, love the Lord, walk in His ways, and hold on to Him!”
23 “If you do, He will drive out all these nations before you, even the ones stronger than you!”
24 “Everywhere you set your foot will be yours, from the desert to Lebanon, from the Euphrates River to the Mediterranean Sea!”
25 “Nobody will be able to stand against you! The Lord will make the whole land terrified of you!”
You Choose: Blessing or Curse
26 “Today, I am putting two choices in front of you all, blessing or curse.”
27 “A blessing if you obey the Lord’s commands.”
28 “A curse if you disobey and turn to fake gods!”
Proclaim the Blessings & Curses on Two Mountains
29 “When you all cross the Jordan, proclaim the blessings from Mount Gerizim and the curses from Mount Ebal!”
30 “These mountains are across the Jordan, near the great trees of Moreh, in the land of the Canaanites.
31 “You all are about to cross over and take this land. When you do, live by God’s commands!”
32 “Be careful to follow all these laws and rules I am giving you today!”
