2 Samuel 7

God’s Covenant with the King

1 When the Lord gave David rest from all his enemies, and he was settled in his palace,

2 He told the prophet Nathan, “Look, I am living in a fly crib made of cedar, and God’s Ark is sitting in a tent.”

3 Nathan said, “Do your thing, king. God is with you.”

God Speaks to Nathan

4 But that night, the Lord gave Nathan a message.

5 “Tell David: ‘You think you the one to build Me a house to live in,’”

6 “I have never stayed in a house, from the day I brought Israel outta Egypt till now, I have been moving in a tent.”

7 “I never asked any of Israel’s leaders, ‘Why have you not all built Me a house?’”

8 “Now tell My servant David: I took you from the pasture, from chasing sheep, and made you ruler over My people.”

9 “I been with you wherever you went, took out your enemies, and made your name big, like royalty worldwide.”

10 “I am setting a place for My people Israel, somewhere they can live in peace without being messed with anymore.”

11 “I have been letting judges rule over them, but now I am giving you rest from your enemies. And check this: I am going to build you a house, a dynasty.”

The Promise of a King Forever

12 “When you pass on and rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your son after you, and I will establish his kingdom.”

13 “He will build Me a house, and I will lock in his throne forever.”

14 “I will be his Father, and he will be My son. If he steps outta line, I will check him, not with hate, but with love and correction.”

15 “My love will not leave him like it did Saul, who I removed.”

16 “Your house, your line, and your throne will last forever before Me, locked in.”

David’s Prayer of Humility

17 Nathan told David everything God said, word for word.

18 Then David went in, sat before the Lord, and said, “Who am I, Lord, What is my story that You brought me this far?”

19 “And now You talking legacy, You speaking about my kids like I am royalty forever. This is not small talk, Lord.”

20 “What more can I say, You know me, inside and out.”

21 “You have done all this because it was Your will, to show who You are.”

22 “There is nobody like You, Lord. No god but You, just like we have heard.”

23 “Who is like Your people Israel, You bought us outta slavery, made us Yours, and rocked the nations with signs and wonders.”

24 “You made Israel Your people forever, and You, Lord, became their God.”

David’s Bold Ask

25 “Now, Lord, do what You said about my house. Let it happen just like You promised.”

26 “Then people will always honor Your name: ‘The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is God over Israel!’ And my house will be established before You.”

27 “You revealed this to me, that You would build me a house. That is why I got the boldness to pray like this.”

28 “Lord God, You are truth. Your promises always hit. And You said all this about Your servant.”

29 “Bless my house now, Lord, and let it stay blessed forever, because when You bless, nobody is reversing it.”
