2 Samuel 6

Bringing God’s Presence Home

1 David gathered 30,000 of his strongest soldiers, top of the top.

2 He and the crew went to Baale-judah to bring back the Ark of God, the box that carries the Name of the Lord Almighty, who sits above the cherubim.

3 They put the Ark on a new cart and rolled it out from Abinadab’s house. Uzzah and Ahio (Abinadab’s sons) were guiding it.

4 Ahio was out front, walking beside the cart.

5 David and all Israel were lit, dancing before the Lord with all they had: lyres, harps, tambourines, rattles, cymbals.

Uzzah Gets Struck

6 When they reached the threshing floor of Nacon, the oxen tripped. Uzzah reached out to steady the Ark.

7 But the Lord’s anger flared, He struck Uzzah down right there for touching what was holy. Uzzah died on the spot.

8 David got mad, “Why did You lash out like that, Lord?” He named that place Perez-uzzah (which means “Uzzah’s Break Point”).

9 David got scared of God that day. He said, “How can I bring the Ark to me now?”

Pause the Mission

10 David did not take the Ark to the City of David. Instead, he parked it at the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.

11 The Ark stayed there three months. The Lord blessed Obed-edom and everything he owned.

Ark Comes to the City

12 Word got to David: “Listen, the Lord is blessing Obed-edom greatly, all because the Ark is at his spot.” So David got hype and went to bring the Ark to the City of David, this time with joy and respect.

13 When the men carrying the Ark had taken six steps, David stopped everything and offered sacrifices, a bull and a fattened calf.

14 David danced hard before the Lord, wearing a linen ephod. Man was not holding back.

15 All of Israel shouted and blew trumpets as they brought the Ark into the city.

Michal Throws Shade

16 But when Michal (Saul’s daughter and David’s wife) looked out the window and saw David dancing wild in the street, she got salty, straight despised him in her heart.

Ark Gets Placed

17 They brought the Ark in and set it in a tent David had pitched for it. David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings to the Lord.

18 When he finished, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

19 Then he handed out food to everybody, men and women alike, a loaf of bread, some meat, and a raisin cake each. Then everyone went home happy.

David and Michal Clash

20 David came home to bless his own house. But Michal stepped in with sarcasm: “Oh, look at the king today, exposing himself in front of the servant girls like a fool.”

21 David said, “I did that for the Lord, the same God who chose me over your father and his whole house. He made me ruler over His people, you think I will not dance for Him?”

22 “I will get even more undignified than this, I will be humbler than ever. But those servant girls, They will respect me for it.”

23 And Michal, Saul’s daughter, never had a child, not for the rest of her life.
