Fool Move by Nabal, Smart Save by Abigail

1 Samuel died, and all Israel showed up to mourn. They buried him at his place in Ramah. After that, David moved deeper into the wilderness of Paran.

Nabal and Abigail

2 There was a rich man in Maon. He had business in Carmel, owned tons of sheep and goats.

3 His name was Nabal. His wife was Abigail, smart and fine. Nabal, Straight up rude and reckless, nobody liked him.

4 David heard Nabal was shearing sheep, basically throwing a big payday party.

5 David sent ten young men with a message. He told them,

6 “Greet him with peace and say, ‘David sends blessings. Hope you and your fam all good.’”

7 “‘I heard you shearing. Just so you know, when your shepherds were near us, we did not mess with them. Nobody stole nothing.”

8 “Ask your men, they will back it up. So please hook up my boys with whatever you got. It is a day of celebration.”

9 David’s men gave the message and waited.

Nabal Disrespects

10 Nabal said, “David, Who is that, Son of Jesse, A lot of servants out here leaving their masters.”

11 “Should I take my bread, my water, and my meat that I killed for my crew, and give it to some runaway?”

12 David’s men went back and told him what Nabal said.

13 David snapped: “Everybody grab your sword.” Four hundred men rolled out with David. Two hundred stayed with the gear.

Abigail Steps In

14 One of Nabal’s servants ran and told Abigail, “David sent messengers to greet our master, he disrespected them hard.”

15 “But David’s crew was good to us, did not mess with us, and they protected us day and night.”

16 “They were like a wall around us when we were in the fields.”

17 “Please do something, because Nabal’s a fool, and nobody can talk sense into him.”

Abigail’s Move

18 Abigail moved quick, packed up 200 loaves of bread, two wine skins, five dressed sheep, roasted grain, raisins, and fig cakes. Loaded them on donkeys.

19 She told her servants, “You all go ahead, I will catch up.” But she did not tell Nabal.

20 As she was riding into a valley, David and his men were coming the other way, locked in.

21 David had just said, “I wasted my time protecting this man’s stuff. Not one thing got stolen, and this is how he repays me?”

22 “May God strike me if I leave a single man from his house alive by morning.”

Abigail’s Bold Plea

23 When Abigail saw David, she jumped off her donkey, bowed low, and fell at his feet.

24 She said, “I will take the blame. Let me speak to you, my lord. Please hear me out.”

25 “Do not pay attention to Nabal, his name means ‘fool,’ and that is what he is. I did not see your messengers.”

26 “God kept you from bloodshed today. Let your enemies be like Nabal, brought low.”

27 “Here is a gift for your men, please accept it.”

28 “Forgive me. The Lord will build you a strong legacy, because you fight His battles and do not do evil.”

29 “Even if someone is out to kill you, the Lord will protect you like precious treasure. But He will hurl your enemies like a rock from a sling.”

30 “When the Lord blesses you and makes you king,

31 You will not have regrets from taking revenge today. Remember your girl when you rise.”

David Shows Restraint

32 David said, “Bless the Lord for sending you to me today.”

33 “Bless you for your good judgment. You kept me from bloodshed and taking matters into my own hands.”

34 “If you had not come quick, every male in Nabal’s camp would have been dead by sunrise.”

35 David took the gifts and said, “Go home in peace. I listened to you. I respect you.”

Nabal’s End

36 Abigail got home. Nabal was throwing a big party, drunk and feeling himself. So she said nothing till morning.

37 Next day, she told him everything. His heart dropped, like he had a stroke, froze up.

38 About ten days later, God struck him, and Nabal died.

David Marries Abigail

39 When David heard, he said, “Praise God! He handled Nabal and kept me from revenge.” Then he sent word to Abigail, he wanted her as his wife.

40 His messengers said, “David wants to marry you.”

41 She bowed and said, “I am your servant, I will wash the feet of your crew.”

42 Abigail got on a donkey and with five maids went with David’s messengers. She became his wife.

43 David also married Ahinoam from Jezreel. So now he had two wives.

44 Meanwhile, Saul gave David’s first wife, Michal, to Palti, son of Laish from Gallim.
