1 Samuel 24

David Could Have Ended Saul… but Did Not

1 After Saul finished chasing the Philistines, someone told him, “David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.”

2 So Saul grabbed 3,000 of Israel’s coldest soldiers and went hunting for David near the wild goat rocks.

3 On the way, Saul stepped into a cave to use the bathroom. What he did not know, David and his boys were hiding deep in that same cave.

4 David’s crew whispered, “Listen, this the day the Lord talked about! He handed your enemy over, do what you want to him.” David crept up… and quietly cut off a piece of Saul’s robe.

5 But right after that, David felt guilty, that cut hit different.

6 He told his boys, “Nah, I cannot do my king dirty. He is the Lord’s anointed. I am not putting my hands on him.”

7 He shut his crew down hard, did not let them touch Saul. Saul walked out the cave, clueless.

David Confronts Saul, Respectfully

8 Then David came out the cave shouting, “My king!” Saul turned around. David bowed low with his face to the ground.

9 David said, “Why are you listening to people saying I am out to get you?”

10 “Today the Lord gave you to me in that cave. Some said kill you, but I spared you. I said, ‘I will not touch the Lord’s anointed.’”

11 “Look, I got a piece of your robe in my hand. I could have got you, but I did not. That proves I am not trying to harm you. I am not sinned against you, but you chasing me like I am the villain.”

12 “May the Lord judge between me and you. But I am not laying a finger on you.”

13 “Like the old saying goes: ‘Evil comes from evil people.’ But I am not like that.”

14 “Who you even chasing, man, A dead dog, A flea?”

15 “Let the Lord judge. Let Him handle this beef. Let Him plead my case and rescue me from you.”

Saul Breaks Down

16 When David finished talking, Saul cried out, “Is that you, my son David?” Then he broke down crying.

17 He said, “You are more righteous than me. You treated me good, I was trying to kill you.”

18 “You showed me mercy today. The Lord gave me to you, and you did not kill me.”

19 “Who does that, If you catch your enemy slipping and let him go, that is wild. May the Lord bless you for what you did.”

20 “I know you are going to be king one day. I know you will run Israel strong.”

21 “Just promise me, when that day comes, do not wipe out my family. Do not erase my name from my father’s line.”

22 David said, “Bet.” Then Saul went home, but David and his crew went back to the stronghold, still staying cautious.
