Urban Word Bible
1 Samuel 21
Read 1 Samuel 21 in clear, relatable modern language.
On the Run and Hungry
1 David pulled up to Nob and met Ahimelech the priest. The priest got shook when he saw him. “Why you here alone, fam?”
2 David said, “The king sent me on a mission, real hush-hush. My men are posted up at a secret spot.”
3 “I need some bread. Whatever you got on hand, we hungry.”
4 The priest said, “Only holy bread here, showbread. You and your guys must be clean, no funny business.”
5 David said, “We have not touched any women. We kept it clean. Even on regular missions, we stay pure, so trust, today we are good.”
6 So the priest gave him the holy bread, the showbread that had just been swapped out from the presence of the Lord.
Doeg’s Watching
7 Now Doeg the Edomite, chief of Saul’s herdsmen, happened to be there that day, detained by the Lord. He saw everything.
David Gets a Weapon
8 David said, “You got any weapons, Sword, Spear, I had to rush out, did not bring mine.”
9 The priest said, “Only thing here is the sword of Goliath, the one you dropped. Wrapped in a cloth, behind the ephod.” David said, “Say less. There is no sword like that one, I will take it.”
David Flees to Gath
10 David left Nob that day and ran to Achish, king of Gath.
11 But the king’s servants said, “is not this David, The one they sang about, ‘Saul killed thousands, David tens of thousands’?”
12 David heard what they were saying and got real nervous around King Achish.
13 So he switched it up, acted like he lost his mind. Started scribbling on doors and drooling on his beard.
14 Achish said, “You all see this, Dude’s clearly crazy. Why did you bring him here?”
15 “I got enough crazy people, I do not need another one acting wild in front of me. Get him outta here!”
