The Daughters Ask About the Lover
“Where your man at, most beautiful woman, Which way he go so we can help you find him?”
“My man gone down to his garden, to the spice beds, to feed and gather lilies.”
I am my man’s, and my man mine; he feeds among lilies.
The Lover Praises His Bride
You beautiful, my love, as Tirzah, lovely as Jerusalem, awesome as an army with banners.
Turn your eyes from me, they overwhelm me.
Your hair like a flock of goats; your teeth all paired, none missing.
Your cheeks behind your veil look like slices of pomegranate.
Sixty queens, eighty concubines, and endless young women,
But my dove, my flawless one, stands apart, she is her mother’s only daughter, praised by all.
“Who is that rising like dawn, fair as the moon, bright as the sun, majestic as an army with banners?”
The Bride’s Reflection
I went down to the grove of nut trees to see if the vines budded, if the pomegranates bloomed.
Before I knew it, my desire set me among the chariots of my noble people.
“Come back, come back, Shulammite woman; come back so we can look at you.” She says, “Why stare at me like I am a dance of two armies?”
