Nehemiah 7

Appointing Leaders and Guards

1 After the wall was rebuilt and I had set the doors in place, the gatekeepers, singers, and Levites were appointed.

2 I put my brother Hanani, along with Hananiah the commander of the fortress, in charge of Jerusalem, because he was a faithful man who feared God more than most.

3 I said to them, “Do not open the gates of Jerusalem until the sun is hot. While the guards are still on duty, shut and bar the doors. Appoint residents of Jerusalem as guards, some at their posts and some near their homes.”

Registering the People by Genealogy

4 Now the city was large and spacious, but there were not many people in it, and the houses had not been rebuilt yet.

5 Then my God put it on my heart to gather the nobles, officials, and the people by genealogy. I found the book of the genealogy of those who came up first, and here is what I found written in it:

6 These are the people of the province who came back from the captivity of the exiles. King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon had taken them away, and they returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to their own town.

7 They came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, and Baanah. Here is the list of the men of Israel:

Those Without Clear Ancestry

61 The following came from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer but could not prove their family lines or ancestry:

62 The sons of Delaiah, Tobiah, and Nekoda, 642

63 Among the priests: the sons of Hobaiah, Hakkoz, and Barzillai (who had married a daughter of Barzillai the Gileadite and took that name).

64 These searched for their family records but could not find them, so they were disqualified from the priesthood.

65 The governor ordered them not to eat any of the sacred food until there was a priest who could use the Urim and Thummim.

Final Count and Offerings

66 The whole assembly numbered 42,360,

67 Besides their 7,337 male and female servants. They also had 245 male and female singers.

68 They had 736 horses, 245 mules,

69 435 camels, and 6,720 donkeys.

70 Some of the family heads gave to the work. The governor gave 1,000 gold drachmas, 50 bowls, and 530 garments for the priests.

71 Some of the family leaders gave 20,000 gold drachmas and 2,200 silver minas to the treasury for the work.

72 The rest of the people gave 20,000 gold drachmas, 2,000 silver minas, and 67 garments for the priests.

73 The priests, Levites, gatekeepers, singers, temple servants, and all Israel settled in their towns. When the seventh month came and the Israelites were in their towns, the people gathered together as one in Jerusalem.
