Matthew 4

Jesus Is Tested and Starts His Mission

1 After that, the Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness to be tested by the devil.

2 Jesus fasted for 40 days and nights, and by the end, He was starving.

3 The devil came and said, “If You are really God’s Son, turn these stones into bread.”

4 Jesus said, “The Scriptures say, ‘Man does not live on bread alone but on every word from God.’”

5 Then the devil took Him to Jerusalem, to the top of the temple.

6 He said, “If You are God’s Son, jump off! The Scriptures say God will send angels to catch You so You do not even hit Your foot on a stone.”

7 Jesus replied, “The Scriptures also say, ‘Do not test the Lord your God.’”

8 Next, the devil took Him to a high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their riches.

9 The devil said, “I will give You all this if You bow down and worship me.”

10 Jesus said, “Get outta here, Satan! The Scriptures say, ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’”

11 Then the devil left, and angels came to take care of Jesus.

12 When Jesus heard John got arrested, He went to Galilee.

13 He moved to Capernaum, by the Sea of Galilee, in Zebulun and Naphtali’s territory.

14 This fulfilled Isaiah’s prophecy:

15 “Land of Zebulun and Naphtali, by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles.

16 The people living in darkness have seen a great light. Those in the shadow of death, a light has dawned.”

17 From then on, Jesus started preaching, “Repent, because God’s kingdom is here!”

18 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, Jesus saw two brothers: Simon (called Peter) and Andrew. They were fishermen, casting nets into the sea.

19 Jesus said, “Follow Me, and I will teach you to fish for people.”

20 They dropped their nets and followed Him.

21 Then Jesus saw two more brothers: James and John, sons of Zebedee, fixing nets with their dad.

22 Jesus called them, and they left the boat and their dad to follow Him.

23 Jesus traveled all over Galilee, teaching in synagogues, preaching about God’s kingdom, and healing people’s sicknesses.

24 News about Him spread everywhere. People brought Him everyone who was sick, those with diseases, pain, demon possession, seizures, and paralysis, and He healed them all.

25 Big crowds followed Him from Galilee, Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and across the Jordan.
