Matthew 28

Read Matthew 28 in clear, relatable modern language.

The Resurrection

1 “Early Sunday morning, as the sun was coming up, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to check out the tomb.”

2 “Suddenly, there was a crazy earthquake because an angel of the Lord came down from heaven, rolled the stone away, and sat on it.”

3 “The angel’s appearance was lit, literally! His face shined like lightning, and his clothes were bright white.”

4 “The guards were so shook they started shaking and passed out like they were dead.”

5 “The angel said to the women, ‘Do not be scared. I know you are looking for Jesus, the one who was crucified.’”

6 “‘He is not here, He has risen, just like He said He would! Come check out the spot where He was laying.’”

7 “‘Now go tell His disciples: “He has risen from the dead and is headed to Galilee. You all will see Him there.” Remember what I told you!’”

Jesus Appears to the Women

8 “The women ran from the tomb, scared but hyped at the same time, and they booked it to tell the disciples.”

9 “Suddenly, Jesus met them and said, ‘Listen, what is up,’ They ran to Him, grabbed His feet, and worshiped Him.”

10 “Jesus said, ‘Do not be afraid. Go tell My brothers to head to Galilee, they will see Me there.’”

The Guards’ Story

11 “While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and told the chief priests everything that had gone down.”

12 “The religious leaders had a meeting and decided to pay the soldiers a lot of money to keep quiet.”

13 “They told them, ‘Say this: “His disciples came during the night and stole His body while we were asleep.”’”

14 “‘If the governor hears about this, we will handle it so you all do not get in trouble.’”

15 “So the soldiers took the cash and spread the story. That is the rumor still going around today.”

The Great Commission

16 “The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain Jesus had told them about.”

17 “When they saw Him, they worshiped Him, but some still had doubts.”

18 “Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.’”

19 “‘Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.’”

20 “‘Teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And remember this: I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’”
