Matthew 19

Jesus Teaches About Divorce

1 “When Jesus finished talking to the crowd, He left Galilee and went to the region of Judea across the Jordan.”

2 “Big crowds followed Him, and He healed them there.”

3 “Some Pharisees came up to test Him. They asked, ‘Is it okay for a man to divorce his wife for any reason?’”

4 “Jesus said, ‘Have you not read that the Creator made them male and female in the beginning,’”

5 “‘He said, “For this reason, a man will leave his parents, be united with his wife, and the two will become one.”’”

6 “‘So they are no longer two but one. What God joined together, no one should separate.’”

7 “They asked, ‘Then why did Moses allow divorce and let men give their wives a certificate to send them away,’”

8 “Jesus said, ‘Moses let you all do that because of how hard your hearts are, but it was not like that in the beginning.’”

9 “‘I am telling you, anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman is committing adultery.’”

10 “The disciples said, ‘If that is how it is with marriage, maybe it is better not to get married at all.’”

11 “Jesus said, ‘Not everyone can accept this, only those it is meant for.’”

12 “‘Some people are eunuchs by birth, some were made eunuchs by others, and some choose to live like eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven. If you can accept this, do it.’”

Jesus Blesses the Children

13 “People brought their kids to Jesus so He could bless them and pray for them, but the disciples tried to send them away.”

14 “Jesus said, ‘Let the kids come to Me. Do not block them, because the kingdom of heaven belongs to people like them.’”

15 “Then He laid His hands on the kids and blessed them before moving on.”

The Rich Young Ruler

16 “A young man came up to Jesus and asked, ‘Teacher, what good thing do I have to do to get eternal life,’”

17 “Jesus said, ‘Why are you asking Me about what is good, There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.’”

18 “The man asked, ‘Which ones,’ Jesus said, ‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not lie?’”

19 “‘Honor your parents, and love your neighbor as yourself.’”

20 “The young man said, ‘I have kept all of these. What else do I need to do,’”

21 “Jesus said, ‘If you want to be perfect, sell everything you have, give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come follow Me.’”

22 “When the young man heard this, he walked away sad because he had a lot of money.”

Jesus Teaches About Wealth

23 “Jesus said to His disciples, ‘It is hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven.’”

24 “‘In fact, it is easier for a camel to squeeze through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter God’s kingdom.’”

25 “The disciples were blown away and said, ‘Then who can even be saved,’”

26 “Jesus said, ‘With humans, this is impossible. But with God, all things are possible.’”

The Reward for Following Jesus

27 “Peter said, ‘We left everything to follow You. What is in it for us,’”

28 “Jesus said, ‘I am telling you, when the world is made new and the Son of Man sits on His throne, you who have followed Me will sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.’”

29 “‘Anyone who has left houses, brothers, sisters, parents, kids, or fields for My sake will receive a hundred times as much and inherit eternal life.’”

30 “‘But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.’”
